Hostels are making a bid for cost-conscious, style-seeking consumers, glamorising properties as “poshtels” to compete with boutique hotels, confirms World Travel Market’s 2014 Global Trends Report. Originally started in the UK, the trend has spread around the world. To stand out, hostels are giving dorm rooms creative facelifts using cutting-edge art and design, while providing facilities like swimming pools and on-site restaurants.

The colourful cabanas at Selina Hostel in Panama are right on the beach near Playa Venao, a sought after surf spot. There’s also a game room and swimming pool. With 22 clean and comfy en suite and shared rooms, there are plenty of guests around to enjoy the playful vibe.

Creative types might prefer Playland Motel (above) in Rockaway Beach, New York. Each room is decorated by a different artist. Listen to some of NYC’s best indie and electronic beats in the Playland Tavern downstairs.

Matchbox Concept Hostel (above) is located in a fashionable area of Singapore’s Chinatown, and housed in a 19th-century building once used by the country’s oldest Chinese clan association. Rooms include sleeping pods that are equipped with privacy curtains, clothes bars and reading lights.

In Ipoh, Malaysia, The Happy Eight is a peaceful retreat in a quiet part of the old town. Individually themed rooms, most with balconies, are artfully inspired by the natural world. Look out for quirky features like a pond beneath the steel mesh floor.
