The start of a Chinese New Year, as we know it, is a period of celebrations and gatherings. Families and friends visit one another at their houses and surround dinner tables to chat about life, work, relationships…the list is endless.

In this period of merrymaking, it can be easy to forget about how fortunate we all are. In reality, not everybody can afford new clothes or a table full of Chinese New Year goodies.

Which is why we’ve decided that in the midst of welcoming the Year of the Rooster, it’s good to spare a thought on other Singaporeans who do not necessarily have the capacity to celebrate and enjoy CNY as much as we do.

So, we’ve rounded up four charity organisations for you to check out below. Go ahead and spread some love now.

The Food Bank Singapore

Founded by siblings Nichol and Nicholas Ng, The Food Bank Singapore collects non-perishable food from companies and individuals to distribute them to numerous beneficiaries. To donate your excess food items (such as rice, noodles and canned food), simply drop them off at numerous locations around Singapore. For more information, click here.

Community Chest

Bring smiles to the lonely seniors’ faces by making a $50 donation to the Community Chest. With every $50 donation, the organisation will send a Fu Dai (a “prosperity” bag filled with sponsored essentials) to their homes. You may also wish to make a $150 donation for Community Chest to send a Fu Dai to a needy family. For more information, click here.

Children’s Society

From now until March 31, 2017, you can help send a red packet containing any donation to the 67,577 Singaporean youths in need. This initiative, led by the Children’s Society, aims to raise funds to support 75 programmes in their 11 service centres. For more information, click here.

Giant X Food From The Heart

Following its successful Christmas charity drive last year, hypermarket Giant is teaming up with local non-profit organisation Food From The Heart to donate food to the less fortunate. If you’re keen to join in the good effort, feel free to purchase any non-perishable food, household necessities or electronics, toys and stationery at any Giant store. Then, drop the items at Giant’s gift cages from January 26 to 27. For more information, click here.
