The Her World Mentorship Programme returns with a focus on supporting women re-entering the workforce. This year’s mentors share what inspired them to take part.
Carol Lum has worn many hats – including founder of Katapult, one of Singapore’s largest indoor trampoline parks – but her latest role as a mentor has been one of her most meaningful.
“This year’s focus on supporting women re-entering the workforce really resonated with me,” she shares. “I’ve taken two career breaks – one to care for my family, another after selling my business – so I understand the uncertainty that comes with transition.”
With over 18 years of experience across government, private equity, consulting, and entrepreneurship, Carol understands the power of reinvention.
Today, she serves as senior investment director at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), leading foreign investment efforts in sectors such as renewables, low-carbon fuels, agribusiness, and the circular economy.
Carol’s own return to the workforce was partly shaped by a serendipitous encounter at a Mums@Work event in 2019, where she met Sarah McKensey, a senior female leader who encouraged her to consider board service.
That connection led her to the BoardAgender programme, where she gained a new perspective on leadership and networked with senior professionals across industries.
“It was eye-opening,” Carol says. “And it inspired me to give back – I hope sharing my experiences can help inspire and empower mentees as they take their next steps”.
What inspired you to volunteer as a mentor for the Her World Mentorship Programme?
Mentorship – both from individuals and networks – has shaped my journey. Meeting Sarah led me to BoardAgender, which in turn opened doors to Her World’s mentorship programme. It has also helped in creating lasting relationships. I still keep in touch with my mentor and fellow mentees from BoardAgender, and they continue to be a source of support and inspiration.
Most valuable advice from a mentor?
Don’t shortchange yourself. Instead of asking, “Why me?”, ask, “Why not me?” That mindset shift helped me silence self-doubt – especially when returning to the workforce.
How does one make the most of mentorship?
Approach it with an open mind and a spirit of respect. Focus on building a long-term relationship rather than expecting immediate outcomes.
