Meet the 72-year-old woman running 21.1km at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon

She also trekked Mt Kinabalu (4095m) when she was 56, and Mt Rinjani (3726m) at age 66, proving that success has no age limit

“Age is really just a number – it never bothers me at all. I am always proud of my age,” asserts Lee Yau Hoon. At 72, she’s the oldest participant in the half marathon 21.1km category at this year’s Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM).

A step up from the 10km run and a stepping stone towards a full marathon, a half marathon race is a testing run in its own right. Running such a long distance is a feat in itself for someone half her age, much less for someone in her early seventies.

“It never crossed my mind that I would be conquering a distance as far as a half marathon one day,” Yau Hoon reflects. “I was a runner back in my secondary school days, but I stopped running after that.”

It was only years later when she picked up the exercise again, at the age of 52. She was spurred to do so after a health check-up. “In 2002, I was told by my doctor that I had osteoporosis. I was advised to do high impact exercise such as jogging, and hence from that year on, I decided to jog on a regular basis. I cover three to five km daily, at a slow pace of 10min/km.”

This year, she decided to sign up for the half marathon when her son, Tee Kuan Hong, encouraged her to join him in the race. “I was initially reluctant and was thinking of just taking part in the 10 km run, but Kuan Hong told me that he will be pacing me throughout the race. This helped to boost my confidence, and it also fulfils my dream of participating in an official half marathon run!!”

She doesn’t anticipate slowing down anytime soon, and she’s gunning for a personal best at this year’s race. “With SCSM as the biggest mass run after the pandemic, I am definitely excited for the running experience in the heart of Singapore alongside many other like-minded runners, as we aim to run a good race!”

Here, Yau Hoon shares more about how she went from jogging to running a half marathon, her motivation behind running, as well as advice for other runners who hope to follow in her footsteps.

What has your long distance running journey been like?

While it was challenging in the beginning, in 2013, age 63, I took part in my very first official race, the Standard Chartered Marathon Hong Kong 10km race (my husband was posted there to work). My twin sister Lee Yau Hong flew over to HK to be my pacer and help me to achieve an official race time of 1:08:49 – a personal best for me. That inspired me to enjoy more sporting activities, like trekking and hiking, and was glad to be able to complete both Mt Kinabalu (4095m) at age 56 and Mt Rinjani (3726m) at age 66.

Since then, with continued encouragement from my younger son Kuan Hong, we took part in The Twilight Utral Challenge in 2015 (age 65), a team of 3 completing 130km in 10 hr 3 min. Again, with my son and twin sister, we ran the Asics City Relay in 2016 (age 66). 2020 I completed The National Day 5.5km Virtual run alone.

After this, I began to have more confidence to go for longer distance runs, so I gamely registered for the 21Km Marina Run, without telling my son and twin sister, as I wanted to give them a surprise. But sadly, because of Covid, it was changed to a Virtual Run instead. Nevertheless, I still ran it alone, age 70, and clocked a timing of 3hr 9min.

This is your first official half marathon race – what pushed you to sign up for it?

I never thought of participating in any official runs, as I did not have any confidence. My younger son Tee Kuan Hong and my twin’s sister Lee Yau Hong are two of my role models. They are regular runners in all sorts of races, 10km, 21km and of course full Marathons too. They are the ones who give me the inspiration and encouragement that I too can do it!

Lee Yau Hoon
A half-marathon is not easy at any age, much less at 72. How are you feeling, and how have you been preparing yourself for it?
image

As of now, my daily fitness routine would be to jog every morning – weekday – for about 5Km, starting at 5.30am. On Saturdays, I will do a longer jog, around 10km. On Sunday, I will go cycling with my daughter in law around the Marina Bay area. I also train in the gym, running on a treadmill, lifting some weights, and strengthening both my arms and legs.

I train with my son Kuan Hong whenever he comes over to Singapore from JB, where he lives and works. I train with my twin sister too when I go back to Malaysia. My sister had just completed the Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon on 13th Nov within the cut-off time! She is my inspiration that I can do it too!

To be able to complete a long-distance race, I think it depends on both physical and mental state. I am slightly apprehensive about the race, but with my son pacing me, I believe I will be able to complete this race and hope for a slightly better timing than when I ran solo. Nevertheless, I am also excited to clock my first official half marathon timing at SCSM2022!

Lee Yau Hoon
You’ve been running for around 20 years now. What keeps you going? Do you have any tips for older runners?
image

What really keeps me going is I want to grow old and be healthy, independent, mobile and not a burden to my children. I want to be able to continue to help out, seeing to my four adorable grandchildren, who are currently aged 4 to 8. I am also motivated to do so to continue inspiring others who wish to keep fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle even at an old age.

My tips to other older runners are run at your own pace and do not push yourself too much. Your aim is trying to complete the race and not for the timing. To me, my motto in all my runs is to complete my run without stopping to walk! I find that once you stop to walk, you will find it tough to continue after that. So, it is better to slow down your pace instead of stopping to walk.
