Now well into its second decade, the Her World Woman of the Year award celebrates outstanding Singapore women who have not only made their mark on society and the world, but who are inspirational role models to women across the country. With the Young Woman Achiever award being added in 1999 to celebrate the achievements of younger women aged 35 and below in Singapore, the event has become one of the biggest and most prestigious of its kind in Singapore.
Held at the Shangri-La hotel this year, Her World Woman of the Year 2013 reached its 22-year milestone.
While SPH magazines CEO Mr Loh Yew Seng opened the event, Guest of Honour and former Her World Woman of the Year winner in 1993, Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob delivered a stirring and impassioned speech in which she called on the women of Singapore to continue to strive for equality while reminding the women of Singapore just what a lucky position we find ourselves in.
Her World Woman of the Year chief judge and chairperson, and indeed former winner in 1999, Ms Jennie Chua introduced the two main stars of the evening: Woman of the Year Associate Professor Lim Swee Hia and Young Woman Achiever Dr Yeo Sze Ling, both of whom gave moving speeches about humility and gratitude.
Local celebrity and TV host Anita Kapoor played emcee for the evening—proving to be an entertaining segue in-between the lively performances and speeches.
On hand to provide musical entertainment was Child Aid performer Shalynna Johari, who proved to be as much a hit at the awards as at the recent Child Aid concert.
Over two hundred distinguished guests including SPHL CEO Alan Chan, SPHL board of directors, past winners, members of the judging and nomination panels, prominent women, heads of brands and key advertisers attended the grand and elegant affair and celebrated with the winners over a five-course dinner. Each guest also went home with a beautiful Estee Lauder door gift.
Sponsors for the gala evening were Mercedes Benz, Hublot, Estee Lauder and DBS.
