The 1950s single-storey, inter-terrace house in a tranquil Serangoon Gardens neighbourhood was purchased by her parents in 2006. Then, Maddy’s father passed away three years ago and, feeling that it was too big for one person, her mother invited her children to live with her. After much discussion, Maddy decided to move in with her family and renovate it.
Maddy’s brother, award-winning designer Gabriel Tan, was tasked with the renovation. “My brother’s office is just next door, so it was a given that he’d be the one renovating this house – even if our tastes are quite different.”
“My favourite part of renovating the house was being able to transform a home I spent a large part of my life in. It is a home that has sentimental value,” says Gabriel.
He is known for a sophisticated, clean and minimalist aesthetic influenced by Scandinavian and Japanese designs, while Maddy favours the cosy, sun-drenched rustic look of the Mediterranean. “You can tell which elements are mine,” says Maddy.
