Check out the creative concealed storage space in this four-room HDB flat

To maximise storage space for a family of four, this 90sqm apartment was redesigned with creativity – for example, having the laundry rack in the living room

When the homeowners – a family of four – approached Mark Chen of Artistroom to redesign a four-room flat in Toa Payoh, it was clear that a creative approach and substantial overhaul was needed.

The apartment itself had a smaller area of 90sqm compared to a usual four-room flat, and also only had one bathroom. Utilising every possible space was essential.

In their brief, the homeowners prioritised having ample storage, easy maintenance, and adequate kitchen space as they cook often. To address the brief, Mark reconfigured the layout to include as much concealed storage space as possible. Materials like terrazzo flooring and a subtle, muted palette were introduced to ensure that the home would stand the test of time.

The living room houses plenty of concealed storage, like the full-height TV cabinet. The bi-fold doors on the right open up to reveal the household’s Steigen laundry rack, which had to be relocated here to free up space in the kitchen.

The home was kept bright and minimalist to enhance its spaciousness, with touches like a TV frame which conceals all wires in the dining room. Next to the dining table is a full-height shoe cabinet and storage area.

Since the kitchen was limited and every inch had to be utilised, Mark had to reconfigure the old layout to accommodate appliances like the refrigerator and dishwasher.

Other activities that are traditionally done in the kitchen area, like laundry, had to be relegated to other parts of the house – like the Steigen laundry rack in the living area, for instance. The washer and dryer were moved to the bathroom.

In each of the bedrooms, Mark created ample study space and storage in the form of platform beds.

He also added creative, practical elements like a drawer that opens up into an ironing board, which can be tucked away when not in use.

In the bathroom, Mark incorporated micro-cement screed walls for easy maintenance.

Since there was only one bathroom to be shared among the four occupants, it also had to be made more flexible – hence the separate WC and shower areas. That way, it would be possible for more people to use the area at a time without any privacy issues.
