It is said that a woman looks her best when she’s wearing a wedding dress. Perhaps, the same could be said of female leads in popular Korean dramas we tune into such as Penthouse, The World of the Married and Start-Up where stars like Kim So-yeon, Kim Hee-ae and Suzy Bae shined brighter in these dreamy, romantic gowns. Ahead, we take a look at our favourite wedding dresses we have seen in K-dramas.
The highly anticipated Korean drama The Penthouse: War in Life 2, or just Penthouse for short, finally got released in February earlier as a continuation of the exciting plotline of season 1. The opening episode did stellarly and achieved ratings as high as 19 percent.
As the show slowly builds towards its climax, we saw Cheon Seo-jin (played by Kim So-yeon) and Joo Dan-tae (played by Um Ki-joon) enter the marriage hall.
The V-neck long-sleeved dress worn by the bride on the wedding day was from Pronovias while the feathered frock worn at the engagement party is from Bridal Kong.
The public stills from Penthouse 2 also featured more wedding photos where Kim So-yeon wore various Bridal Kong gowns. These dresses not only showed off her graceful figure, but they also exuded a powerful aura.
Besides Kim So-yeon and Um Ki-joon, Eugene and Yoon Jong-hoon also played a loving couple in the drama. The two had taken wedding photographs together and went for a fresh, sweet vibe. Eugene’s wedding dresses were simpler in design and didn’t have many accompanying accessories, yet they looked romantic and elegant.
The popular series The World of the Married has concluded but not before it clinched the highest-rated drama in Korean cable television history in 2020. Kim Hee-ae also took home the Best Actress (TV) win at the 56th Baeksang Arts Awards for her portrayal of Ji Sun-woo. The show is based on the British series Doctor Foster that delves into the breakdown of a perfect marriage and its spiral into revenge.
In the series, Kim Hee-ae wore a sophisticated boat neckline gown to have wedding photos taken. At 53, Kim Hee-ae shined with nothing but feminine elegance.
The World of the Married had many twists and turns thanks to the betrayal and derailment of the marriage between Kim Hee-ae and Park Hae-joon. Eventually, Han So-hee got married to the latter and took wedding photos as well. Here, she wears a dignified off-shoulder gown with a body-hugging silhouette that showed off her trim figure.
Starring Lee Joon-gi and Moon Chae-won, the 2020 Flower of Evil combined elements of suspense thriller, urban love and social realism to create a complicated and confusing plot that kept viewers hooked.
After the finale aired, the crew revealed the wedding photos taken by the two main characters. Moon Chae-won wore an understated wedding dress featuring a simple V-neckline and looked blissful beside Lee Joon-gi.
Start-Up starred the “Nation’s First Love” Suzy Bae and Nam Joo-hyuk. With its novel themes and star-studded line-up, it was one of the most anticipated Korean dramas in the second half of 2020. Kim Seon-ho was the breakthrough star from the show, whose popularity soared after he played a man who emphasised love and righteousness.
In the finale. Suzy wore a Safiyaa square neck dress with shawl-like sleeves that made the silhouette particularly elegant against her simple bun. Nam Joo-hyuk wore a black Dior woollen tuxedo and exuded a gentlemanly demeanour. Finally, the two wore Chaumet Triomphe de Chaumet platinum wedding rings.
After five years, Kim Tae-hee finally returned to the screen with the 2020 Hi Bye, Mama! The show was about a female ghost who was given an opportunity to become human again if she could go back to her place in 49 days and consequently decided to reappear in front of her re-married husband and toddler daughter.
As a mother of two daughters, Kim Tae-hee chose this project as her postpartum comeback, showing that it has special significance to her. She also wore a wedding dress again in the show. At 41, Kim Tae-hee is well-maintained. The simple and elegant wedding dress reflects her demure and sophisticated temperament.
Romantic comedies have always been a popular genre and the 2018 What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim was no different. The show was headlined by Park Seo-joon as Lee Young-joon and Park Min-young as Kim Mi-so. The scene in the final episode where the two walked hand in hand into the wedding hall no doubt satisfied the hearts of many viewers.
As you can see from the photos, Park Min-young wore a white off-shoulder wedding gown as she held onto Park Seo-joon.
Featuring Gong Yoo, Lee Dong-wook, Kim Go-eun and Yoo In-na, the 2016 Guardian: The Lonely and Great God was a smash hit that many know and love thanks to its creative plot.
In the 16th episode, Kim Go-eun wore a pure white shawl-style wedding dress with buckwheat flower (which symbolises love) garland. The simple Jenny Packham dress was embellished with lace trims and beads to add a fresh and refined image to the main character.
How can we forget My Love from the Star that was popular all across Asia? Starring Kim Soo-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun, episode 18 saw the main character Cheon Song-yi wearing a wedding gown from Oscar de la Renta 2014 Spring collection. The see-through shoulder detail combined with star embellishments gave the bride a romantic elegant look.
Moreover, in Legend of the Blue Sea, Jun Ji-hyun sported an asymmetric gown that accentuated her collarbones and shoulders as she walked down the aisle alongside Lee Min-ho.
With a career spanning over 20 years, Son Ye-jin has been spotted in many classic wedding dresses. One example is the pure and lovely style in A Moment To Remember or the feminine, goddess-like look in Don’t Look Back: The Legend of Orpheus. Another look we loved was the graceful and charming wedding dress she wore for the launch of the romantic comedy My Wife Got Married.
With shows such as New Tales of Gisaeng, Gangnam Beauty and Graceful Family under her belt, Im Soo-hyang is slowly made a name for herself across Asia. In 2020, she starred in When I Was The Prettiest alongside Ji Soo and Ha Seok-jin and shared many behind-the-scenes images. These included shots of her dressed in a white wedding gown with a deep V-neckline. The dazzling beads on the skirt further helped Im Soo-hyang shine brighter in front of the camera.
