Sometimes, trends on social media are so pervasive it trickles into the realm of luxury fashion. Love it or hate it, Mermaidcore, which gained traction on TikTok last year, is here to stay. The trend, which espoused emulating the mythical sea created through hair, makeup and clothes, gets a tasteful update on the Fall/Winter 2023 runways. Creative director Olivier Rousteig unearthed a sea of inspiration by way of seashell inspired cups adorned on a pearl-caged bustier at Balmain. Colours also played a major role at Proenza Schouler – think bright beautiful shades of the big, blue ocean painted on a luxurious velvet button-down coat dress.
