No ‘body’ is perfect, right? We are all different sizes and shapes and while that adds beauty to the world it can sometimes make it hard to find the perfect fit when it comes to clothes shopping.
This is where the art of bespoke tailoring – for suits – and made-to-measure – for everything else – comes into play. Back in the day (ie. when your parents were kids) just about everyone got a lot of their clothes tailored. There was always a handy sewing aunty on every block to make your dad a suit, your mum a cheongsam and to make your first prom dress.
Unfortunately, here in Singapore many of these small business have, well, gone out of business due to the seamstresses and tailors aging out of the industry – and their children not taking it up.
Now I personally have had a long love affair with bespoke clothes. Pretty much 80% of my wardrobe is bespoke in some way – either an emerging designer friend has made me something slightly different from their collection, or I’ve tapped a tailoring friend to make me stuff. It is, however, quite expensive to do this for everything including basics.
Which is why I was excited to discover this new Singapore company Inventory. Basically it’s an online store for bespoke suits and made-to-measure basics like tailored trousers, shirts, tops and jackets. Bespoke tailoring is usually used to describe suits that are fitted to your own style and shape; while made-to-measure is for other clothing that’s basically not a suit.
Inventory does menswear and womens wear made-to-measure and the pieces you can choose from include a wrap jacket with a buckle detail for $280; a biker jacket for between $220 and $280 depending on the fabric chosen; a piped shirt (it looks like the very on-trend pajama shirts) in cotton for $220-$280; trousers with a front slit detail for between $220 and $280; and wide-leg denim jeans – either selvedge or non-selvedge for $220-$280.
The prices are pretty damn good, I have to say, and I should know since I’ve spent thousands of dollars on bespoke and made-to-measure over the years. 🙂
The designs are fairly simple – but they are fashion-forward enough to look elegant, not dowdy. The Inventory team say they’re more focused on construction, fabric, details and fit, and that the items are meant to be ‘built to last, get better with age and that remain timeless’.
All of which means getting a couple of wardrobe basics that fit you perfectly and that will truly last is an excellent investment.
