It’s the June school holidays, and while most of us are working, it still is a great month to take a break from work. And while you might think that you’re running out of things to do in Singapore, there’s a particular event that’s happening this Friday that you can check out this weekend.

Yes, we’re talking about i Light Singapore 2022. After a two-year hiatus from the scene, the iconic sustainable light festival is back this year from 3 June to 26 June — and it’s bigger and brighter than ever.

As part of the festival, here, you can expect to see 20 light art installations done by 57 artists, across 14 countries, of which 9 installations are done by locals.

But that’s not all. In fact, foodies at heart can also look forward to the return of GastroBeats, the ultimate festival boasting a wide array of mouthwatering bites by renowned local and international culinary personalities accompanied by live performances, and graffiti art, and a massive food-themed inflatable park.

GastroBeats

If you’re looking for things to do with your friends, family or even your partner this weekend, then GastroBeats is the place to be. After transforming the 14,200sqm space into a full-blown festival, you can expect to indulge in a variety of experiences that include savouring the taste of Singapore’s dynamic hawker and street food culture, or you can even treat yourself over to the ‘Culinary Masters by Sarah Todd’, where you’ll find a collaboration menu by Sarah Todd (Australia) and chefs George Calombaris (Australia), Genevieve Lee (Singapore) and Derek Cheong (Singapore) from MasterChef.

Aside from food, you will get the chance to explore (and experience) Singapore’s art scene over at the graffiti corner, of which you can even try your hands at spray painting. And as for the young ones (or the young at heart), you’ll also be glad to know that there will also be an inflatable playground for them to play in within the festival grounds too.

GastroBeats will be open from 4pm to 10.30pm daily (3 June to 26 June, 2022) Admission tickets start from $9 (not inclusive of food and drink). Please note that this is a cashless event. Tickets are available on Klook. For more information, please visit www.gastrobeats.com.

Organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and presented by DBS, the Festival will see the works of 57 artists from 14 countries, all of which 9 are from Singapore. And while all the light art installations are free to roam, there is, however, one installation that’s ticketed — and that is the Lightwave: Isle of Light, Empowered by OPPO.

1. Lightwave: Isle of Light

Over at the specially constructed floating pontoon, visitors will get to experience five unique zones with immersive features that range from enchanting holographic
projections to illuminated motion-capture graphics as well as shadow play and light beams that are reminiscent of those in a mystical forest. More importantly, it also offers a lot of Instagram-worthy photo opportunities too.

Venue: Marina Bay Lower Boardwalk (near Red Dot Design Museum)

Ticketing: Weekday ticket – $8, weekend ticket – $10, bundle of 4-weekday tickets – $28, bundle of 4-weekend tickets – $36, bundle of 5 or more weekday tickets – $6 each, bundle of 5 or more weekend tickets – $8 each.

Here, the installation requires guests to shift around on the artwork itself to activate the lighting that changes according to the degree of tilt.

5. Ruffled Ice

At first glance, you might think that the installation is part of a grand setup for a wedding, but if you look close enough, you’ll notice that the Ruffled Ice structure, is made with recycled plastic. In this case, the artwork is supposed to depict melting icebergs and ice caverns sculpted from redundant packaging materials — highlighting the massive impact plastics have on our environment.

7. Alone Together

This clever installation is inspired by the scenes of housing estates in Singapore amidst the Circuit Breaker period when most of us lived in isolation. Upon scanning the QR code provided at the station itself, you’ll also be invited to be part of the shared memory, which you can access from your mobile device.

10. Shish-ka-buoy

If you didn’t already know, the name of this installation is a clever play on words, from the original phrase, Shish Kebabs. If there’s one installation, you cannot miss out on from the Festival, it would definitely have to be the Firefly Field. 12. Fallen

This gorgeous art piece follows the story of an extraterrestrial jellyfish that roams the universe in search of stars to consume. However, during its quest, it mistook humans’ trash as a star and it grew heavy from consuming it, causing it to crash land on Earth.

17. Underworld

If you take a closer look at this installation, you’ll notice that they are all actually made out of recycled fishnets! But what does it signify?
