Bananas

Its phallic shape isn’t all this fruit’s got going for it. It also contains potassium, a nutrient that helps keep sodium levels in your blood in check (too much sodium in your system can lead to bloating and hinder blood flow to your sexual organs).

Bananas are also a concentrated source of energy, which you definitely need if you want to maintain your sexual stamina. Its magnesium and B vitamins can also enhance your libido.

Avocado

If you want to have more energy for sex and boost your sex drive, a dose of this creamy green fruit can help. In addition to heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, avocados have a good amount of vitamin B6, which is thought to be a libido enhancer as it helps with oestrogen and testosterone function.

Plus, it’s rich in the “sex vitamin”, or vitamin E, an antioxidant that keeps you youthful, helps in the production of sex hormones, and increases blood flow to your genital region.

Red Meat

Now you have another reason (besides flavour) to tuck into a juicy steak or burger – beef, especially the grass-fed variety, is packed with zinc, a mineral that boosts testosterone levels in the body, increases your libido, and limits the production of a hormone called prolactin, which can impair sexual function.

Incidentally, zinc is also found in oysters, which is well-known aphrodisiac food. A word of caution: Red meat is high in saturated fat and cholesterol, so remember not to eat too much of it.

Coffee

Its high caffeine content keeps you alert and focused throughout the day, but that’s not all. Studies have also found that coffee increases a woman’s sex drive by increasing blood flow to her genitals. And, if you love vigorous sex, you’ll be pleased to know that coffee has also been found to boost athletic performance. Talk about the perfect pick-me-up!

Blueberries
image

We’ve heard that blueberries are good for the brain and skin, but they can also help a flagging sex drive, first by improving blood circulation, and second by increasing the production of the feel-good hormone, dopamine.

Not like you even need one reason to indulge in these deliciously sweet berries, but it’s good to know that you’re helping your sex life whenever you pop one of these little guys into your mouth.

Ginger
image

Like garlic and chilli pepper, ginger contains allicin, which relaxes the blood vessels and thins the blood, and improves blood flow to every part of your body, including your sexual organs.

When your blood circulation is healthy, all your tissues and cells receive good doses of oxygen, hormones and nutrients, which in turn raises your arousal level, increases the size and sensation of your clitoris and aids with vaginal lubrication. If you find ginger too fibrous to eat, boil a few slices in water to make a nourishing spicy tea instead.

Fatty Fish

Salmon, mackerel, tuna, trout, sardines, and other oily fish are loaded with an essential fatty acid called omega-3. Omega-3 is said to be the building block of sex hormones in men and women, so don’t hold back from feasting on foods that have it. Omega-3 also prevents the build-up of plaque in the arteries, thereby improving blood circulation to every part of your body.

And finally, it increases your brain’s production of dopamine, which is said to trigger sexual arousal. Don’t like oily fish because of its strong smell? Flaxseeds and walnuts also contain impressive amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.

Figs

Fresh or dried, this fibre-rich fruit helps your sex life in two ways: its high magnesium content helps in the production of androgen and oestrogen, sex hormones that control your libido, plus, they increase the production of nitric oxide, an amino acid that improves blood circulation throughout the entire body (yes, including to your nether region!).

Liver

Don’t turn your nose up at liver. It’s a good source of zinc, a mineral that is closely associated with sexual function due to its impact on testosterone production. Women with higher levels of testosterone have a higher sex drive, so if you haven’t been feeling sexy of late, it might be time to add a little liver to your meals.

Asparagus
image

Like most other green veggies, asparagus is thought to improve your sex drive because it helps to balance your hormone levels. In particular, it is high in folic acid, a B vitamin that can increase the production of histamine, which is essential for a healthy sex drive.

Green Tea
image

This humble beverage contains caffeine, which studies have shown helps increase sexual desire in women. In addition, it has L-theanine, an amino acid that has calming and tranquilising effects due to its ability to raise dopamine levels in the brain (dopamine is a well-known mood booster).

This is good news for those of you who often feel too tense to enjoy sex, or who simply cannot relax enough to feel sexually aroused. If you choose green tea varieties that contain ginseng, you’re in for an extra benefit – for centuries, the root of the ginseng plant has been thought to have sex drive- and sexual performance-enhancing properties.

Eggs

The B vitamins in eggs are said to keep your sex drive elevated and your stress levels, down. Stress can get in the way of a satisfying sex life as it prevents you from feeling relaxed and can cause problems like performance anxiety. As eggs are also high in protein, they can also help you maintain the stamina you need for an all-night sex session!
