Let them eat cake

The fact that cakes work in almost any type of flavour and are just so pretty to look at (when done right) is why we are so in love with them. Chocolate, strawberry, cheesecake, cupcake, or even cakes with unique local flavours – we love and want them all. And really, sometimes all you need to make your day better is some coffee and cake. Here are our recommendations for the best places to get your sweet fix, whether it’s just a petite slice or the full works to savour with your loved ones. Bon appetit!

Temptations Cakes

Its signature cake, the heavenly Chocolate Etoile, has been making Singaporeans happy for decades (since 1985, to be exact) and you’ll know exactly why once you’ve had a bite of it. You’ll love the delicious velvety bittersweet Belgium chocolate mousse amongst layers of moist and light chocolate sponge cake, coated with chocolate ganache, croquant nuts and gold chocolate flakes. Get it for $5 a slice or $13-$67.50 for a full cake, depending on the size. If you can bear to tear yourself away from this cake – or if (shock! horror!) you’re not a chocolate lover – try other options such as Red Velvet Caramel Cake, Strawberry Bagatelle and Oreo Cheesecake.

How could you not want to visit a cake store with this moniker? You don’t have to be a fashionista to enjoy the bakes here but you must be a lover of cakes in all shapes, sizes and flavours. Cupcakes, sliced cakes, whole cakes, cheesecakes – all in various flavours. Then there are the brownies, crumbles and tarts too. If you want something different, try the tofu cheesecake, which comes in strawberry and peach flavours. If you really can’t decide, go for the assorted cake platter ($65), which comprises of 10 slices of cakes including Victoria sponge, red velvet cheesecake and spiced carrot cake.

The Fabulous Baker Boy
image

With cake names like Ms Beyonce, Ms Mariah Carey and Ms Celine Dion, you know you’ll definitely have a fabulous time here. The ‘Diva Series’ is named after well-known singers and even features our very own local diva – The Jacintha (pandan and cream sponge filled with naked cream cheese, Melaka sugar crumbs and topped with a coconut cream and gula Melaka swiss meringue butter cream). Signature bakes include AB Fab Red Velvet ($9.50 per slice/$95 a cake), Chocolate Caramel ($9 per slice/$90 a cake) and Big Lub’s Carrot Cake ($9 per slice/$90 a cake).

Patisserie G

The cakes here are oh-so-elegant and absolutely delicious. And with names like The G Spot (dark chocolate mousse, chocolate meringue, chocolate hazelnut praline crunch), Hazelnut Opera (hazelnut ganache, coffee sponge, chocolate ganache) and Strawberry Shortcake (white sponge, fresh strawberries, vanilla chantilly cream), you’ll be forgiven for pretending that you’re enjoying them in a chic patisserie in Europe. If you’re the adventurous type, sample the Lychee Rose Cheesecake or Sake Kasu Cheesecake. And, if you love any of them, whole cakes are available to order too.

Indulge in an array of delectable cakes here and you’ll certainly be asking for more. With a mix of both classic and innovative flavours, we bet the biggest decision you’ll make here is whether to buy the whole cake or just a slice. If you want to keep it local, try the Ondeh Ondeh Cheesecake ($7 a slice/$56 for 1kg cake), which mixes gula melaka into the centre of the creamy cheese and the crunchy base, with a generous sprinkling of desiccated coconut on top. Other delicious choices include Choc’orange ($7 a slice), Passion Fruit Milk Chocolate Cake ($7 a slice/$45 for 900g cake) and Royal Hazelnut Crunch ($11 a slice/$61 for 1kg cake). A three-day advanced order is required for full cakes.

Lady M Confections

With roots in New York, this brand is the pioneer of Mille Crêpe cakes and counts supermodel Linda Evangelista and fashion designer Issey Miyake among its fans. Its signature Mille Crêpe cakes feature no less than 20 paper-thin handmade crêpes layered with light pastry cream and gently caramelised on top until golden. Try it in its natural form or in flavours such as chocolate and green tea. You can get whole cakes here too and they don’t get any prettier than the Red Velvet (three layers of dark cocoa-rich sponge cake with smooth frosting concocted from fresh whipped cream and cream cheese tucked between each layer) and Checkers (a precise and tender checkerboard of vanilla and chocolate sponge cake, with fresh whipped cream tucked between the squares, all outfitted in a silky dark chocolate ganache).

Other yummy options include Once in a Blue Moon (blueberry cheesecake, $38.90), The Modern Duke’s Pudding (Oreo cookies and cream, $35.90) and Milo Dinosaur (inspired by that drink, S$32.90). Order online and get them delivered to your doorstep or pick them up at your convenience.

What started as a small bakery in 1997 is now a chain of outlets in Singapore and Hong Kong, serving both food and cakes. Cupcakes, cheesecakes, pound cakes and classic cakes – you’ll get them all here. The Chocolate Matcha Cake is both a visual and a tasteful delight, and the light green tea sponge cake layered with rich chocolate truffle and smooth green tea cream is an example of east-meets-west perfection. Other great choices include Gula Melaka Pandan Cake, Blueberry Maple Cake and Carrot Walnut Cake.

You’ll get cupcakes ($3.90 each/$22 for every half dozen) in mainstay flavours such as dark chocolate ganache, earl grey lavender, cinnamon brown sugar and strawberry white chocolate. Cakes (layer/tiered) come in lavish flavours such as peanut butter banana and citrus berry.
