South Korean Actress Kim Hee-ae took home the best actress award (for television series) at the recent Baeksang Arts Awards for her performance in The World of The Married, which ended its run in South Korea recently.
The World Of The Married was a runaway success, overtaking tiger-mum drama Sky Castle (2018) to become the country’s most watched cable drama serial.
In particular, the star of the show, 53-year-old Kim, impressed many viewers at home and overseas with her portrayal of Ji Sun-woo, a doctor with a seemingly perfect life who discovers her husband’s infidelity.
The World Of The Married, an adaptation of BBC series Dr Foster (2015 to 2017), was not expected to be a hit, due to its mature 19+ rating.
On streaming platform Viu, which is available in 16 markets, 55 per cent of all its users in Asia tuned in to the series. In Singapore, it was the most watched drama on Viu during its run, with more than 50 per cent of Viu Premium users watching its finale.
For many, Kim was the highlight. Ms Ginny Koh, 26, who works in healthcare, says the actress blew her away. “I could feel the pain and the dilemma Ji Sun-woo felt when she found out about the affair. When you can feel the emotions through the screen, that’s when you know it’s a good drama.”
According to Yonhap news agency, BBC Studios producer Charles Harrison also had high praise for Kim, saying: “I was amazed by her acting skills as she captured a particular emotion with such sensitivity, portraying the look of a woman realising that everything she believed was a complete lie.
