We’re not gonna lie – actress-entrepreneur Cheryl Wee leads a pretty enviable life.
The daughter of beauty and hair mogul Jean Yip jet-sets around the globe in luxury with five-month-old baby boy and husband Roy, has television and music success under her belt and is the owner of an eponymous Wellness and Weight Management Centre.
Yet, despite all her fame and fortune, Cheryl is paradoxically down to earth and enchantingly natural.
“Motherhood showed me that I don’t need a lot of things. I just need my card holder, phone, cards and a hair tie and I’m ready to head out,” she said.
We recently had a chance to sit down with Cheryl to talk about her journey to body confidence (read the full interview here), as well as her favourite things like her go-to skincare product, fondest memory and shopping haunts.
“Face moisturiser. I have eczema and very sensitive skin. I have a few brands that I really like but one of them is Super Hydrator by ClinicA from Jean Yip that uses natural herbs and doesn’t cause any flare-ups. Second one I love to use is the La Roche-Posay (moisturiser) because it’s very gentle on sensitive skin.”
“Mornings. Because I get to play with my son. He’s awake and happy (in the morning) because he would have had enough sleep. I’m a morning person.”
“My dresses. Sometimes I get very lazy and don’t know what to wear. I wore a lot of dresses that concealed my baby bump in the first few months of my pregnancy when I didn’t want people to know that I was pregnant. My sister is a fashionista, she’ll prepare her outfits in advance but I’m always in a rush and I’ll just get dressed and head out the door.”
“Inspire others and find your best self. It’s my motto for my company and myself as well. When you inspire others, you have to constantly inspire yourself and seek improvement. Inspiring others means you don’t keep all the good things to yourself and you’ll pay it forward. ”
“During the tea ceremony of my wedding. I love my grandmother a lot. She is illiterate but she’s one of the wisest women I know. She’s such a strong woman but she couldn’t live to see my wedding. Although we’re Catholics, I wanted to offer her tea so we poured tea on the floor. That was a favourite memory of mine but at the same time a sad memory because I miss her so much and she liked Roy a lot as well. I’m her eldest granddaughter and I’m sure she would have wanted to see me get married.
When I was younger, I stayed with her. I didn’t like her when I was younger and I was quite embarrassed of her because she didn’t speak English and she spoke very loudly as she was partially deaf. As I grew up, I started to learn to love her and I saw so many good things in her. When I practised my singing at home, she would always encourage me even though she couldn’t hear. When I cried, she would always comfort me.”
“Chocolates. Chocolate brownies. Chocolate lava cake. (*laughs*)”
“I love Ed Sheeran and I love this song called “What Do I know?” He’s such a superstar but he’s so humble. It’s such a happy song and such a humble song. He sang: “Just re-remember life is more than fittin’ in your jeans,” I find that it’s such an uplifting song.”
“Online. I like Fashion Bunker, ASOS, Revolve and Love Bonito. I found myself buying a lot of Love Bonito stuff after pregnancy because the foreign brands are so expensive. I do enjoy window shopping but I’m not a huge shopper. Roy is the shopper.”
