Known as the biggest night in Hollywood, the 92nd Academy Awards, or the Oscars, recently wrapped up. As with any award shows, there were the hits and misses on the red carpet. But beyond that, the ceremony played host to many historic and viral moments.
From Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite amazing victory to Billie Eilish’s tear-jerking performance, here’s recap on eight highlights from the night you have to know.
The Bridesmaids star stepped out on the red carpet in a brilliant red Valentino gown. What caught our attention, however, was the unconventional shape and ruffled details running along the skirt. Love it or hate it, netizens have compared the design to anything from lasagna, sea creatures to the vagina.
Here at Her World, we love when women uplift each other. And that was what Natalie Portman did with her Dior haute couture gown. The resplendent black and gold ensemble had the names of female directors who got snubbed by the awards embroidered on the lapel of the cape. The names included Little Women’s Greta Gerwig and The Farewell’s Lulu Wang.
Timothée Chalamet wasn’t afraid to show his goofy, playful side as he shared the red carpet with Bombshell actress Margot Robbie. As they both were posing for the cameras, Chalamet quietly sneaked up to Robbie before she noticed and squished his cheeks in glee. Aww.
During the presentation for the Best Costume Design award, presenters Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig went into a musical medley. During their performance, the camera cut to the young singer who just happened to cringe. Netizens were quick to pick up on that reaction, with some voicing their support for the awkward performance while others decried Eilish’s probable lack of knowledge that the duo was once collaborators on comedy show Saturday Night Live.
In his speech for Best Actor, Phoenix delved into social issues such as cancel culture and inequality. He later went on to talk about his past misgivings and how he had been given a second chance before ending with a lyric written by his late brother River that said: “run to the rescue with love, and peace will follow”.
Eilish, on the other hand, dedicated a performance of The Beatles’ Yesterday for the Oscars In Memoriam segment that commemorated people in the industry that had passed in the last year.
Besides the empowering plot, Disney’s Frozen is also known for producing songs that we play on repeat. This time around, it was Into The Unknown.
Idina Menzel and Norwegian singer Aurora performed the song on stage and was joined by the singers who had performed the powerful song in their native languages. Performers included Gam Wichayanee from Thailand and Takako Matsu from Japan. Watch their jaw-dropping performance above.
Another performance of the night was Eminem’s Lose Yourself from the 2002 film 8 Mile – a rather odd choice for the 2020 awards ceremony, right?
While the song won Best Original Song in 2003, many felt that the surprise performance was misplaced (he did not appear in that year’s ceremony). Martin Scorsese was one of them and had appeared to have fallen asleep. The rapper gave thanks for the opportunity and apologised on his Instagram saying, “sorry it took me 18 years to get here.”
After scoring a string of awards ranging from the Golden Globe Awards, British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) and Screen Actor Guild Awards (SAG), Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite made history again as it swept up four awards at the Oscars.
They were Best Director, Best International Film, Best Original Screenplay and the biggest trophy of the night, the Best Picture. Parasite is the first foreign-language film to be honoured as the Best Picture. Also, we’re loving Sandra Oh’s enthused response at Bong’s win.
