7 Celebrity couples that have gone through thick and thin

Life is never a bed of roses. Celebrities are not exempted from rejection, cheating, illnesses and difficult circumstances. Celebrities are humans too and just like us, they need a shoulder to lean on in times of adversity. While maintaining a marriage or relationship is never easy, especially when you are in the public eye, these celebrity couples are and have been able to go through life hand-in-hand in spite of all the difficulties and challenges.

You might remember Tablo and his adorable daughter from the hit reality TV show, The Return of Superman, a show where celebrity dads were left to care for their kids alone for two days, without the help of their wives. Tablo, a member of the South Korean hip hop group, Epik High, first met his wife, actress Kang Hye Jung, when she went to his band’s concert with her friends. The duo exchanged their wedding vows in 2009 after dating for a year.

Things got tough for the couple in their second year of marriage when Tablo was embroiled in an education fraud scandal. Tablo hit a low in his career when the public believed that he forged his Stanford degree. Despite the hardship, his wife remained supportive and stayed by his side. Early this year, Tablo posted a snap of his beautiful wife with this heart melting caption, “Happy birthday to an actor with timeless talent and a mother with undying heart”.

The actors were first linked after they met on the set of a Giordano commercial. In 2015, the pair made it official in 2015. Since Kim Woo Bin’s cancer diagnosis in May, Shin Min Ah has stuck by the former, visiting him at the hospital when he gets his treatments.

Despite their nine-year age gap, the romance between the duo culminated in marriage in 1995. 30 years later, they are still going strong and doting parents to two sons. It was a trying time for the couple when Pan Ling Ling was diagnosed with breast cancer. The veteran actress was at a charity golf event with her husband when she found out that she had cancer. She chose to keep the news to herself because she wanted her husband to focus on the game.

During the course of her cancer treatment, Huang Shi Nan did not leave her side. When she woke up screaming from nightmares, Huang was there to comfort and tuck her in. The actor also turned down lucrative projects because he wanted to be there for wife. With her doting husband by her side, Pan Ling Ling was able to win the battle against cancer.

Popular female celebrities have no lack of rich and handsome suitors, but former Miss Chinese International titleholder, Leanna Li walked down the aisle with pint-sized kids’ show host, Wong Cho Lam in 2015. Their relationship is not without its ups and downs. The duo weathered disapproval from the media and fans as well as a dating ban by TVB. Wong has been slammed by the media for being incompatible with Li in terms of looks and was labelled the “short boyfriend” by the media and fans. The lovebirds have been inseparable since 1977. They first met on set of the 1997 drama film BIshonen. While they didn’t have much screen time together in the film, they immediately hit it off and stayed friends for 10 years. In the early 2000s, Shu Qi hit rock bottom in her career when she started dating Leon Lai. Taunted by Leon’s fans, Shu Qi was afraid to step out in public. Thankfully, Stephen Fung was able to help her through the hard time. In 2016, after knowing each other for 20 years and dating for four, the two tied the knot.

Taiwanese singer Vivian Hsu has been married to Singapore-based businessman Sean Lee since 2014. When rumours that her hubby is on the verge of bankruptcy surfaced, Vivian responded to the rumours saying, “It’s okay even if we’re broke. It’s not a big deal and we’ll be penniless at worst – we were born into this world with nothing anyway”.

It has been a rollercoaster ride for Lee Min Jung and Lee Byung Hun who have been married since 2013. Their blissful marriage produced a two-year-old son but it also has been struck by a blackmail scandal. Two female entertainers were charged for threatening to post a video in which Lee Byung Hun made lewd remarks to them. In spite of the scandal, Lee Min Jung stayed by Lee Byng Hun.

In an interview with The Straits Times, she said, “Every relationship has problems but you don’t throw it away when it’s not working. You fix it, just like how everyone used to fix their telephones and television sets. These days, people just throw them away and buy new ones.”
