New year’s eve is probably the biggest party night of the year. But going to bars or clubs to ring in the new year isn’t always as exciting as it sounds. Sometimes, you’re just not in the mood to deal with the throngs of crowds and the wait for ages to get a ride home. So why not try something different this year? Here are eight options to choose from.

Many of us aim to go on a safari holiday or get up close and personal with all sorts of animals at sanctuaries but have you ever experienced our very own Night Safari? It was the first nocturnal wildlife park when it opened in 1994 and has won a whole lot of tourism awards, but it’s definitely not just for visitors. The guided tram ride takes you across six geographical zones of the world, while the walking trails will allow you to see more animals.
Or why not make a booking on board the Gourmet Safari Express, where you’ll get to enjoy a candlelight dinner on a tram as you make your way around the park. The Night Safari closes at midnight so you might not be able to welcome the new year with the animals but it’ll certainly be a great way to spend a few hours of your new year’s eve.

Grab a bunch of friends, picnic blankets, a few bottles of wine and some tasty nibbles and head to a park for a night-time picnic. Start at around 6ish while it’s still bright then eat, drink and be merry till after the sun goes down. It won’t cost you much and it’ll be a night you won’t forget. If you don’t want to wait till midnight, you can even go home before the crowds hit the streets. Remember to pack essentials like mozzie spray, bottles of water and perhaps even some tealights to place around your blankets for a cosy atmosphere.

Invite a few friends over and get ready for a night of old-school entertaining with board games and other games such as Jenga and Twister. You can even turn it into a tournament of sorts and have prizes or just make it a night of pure fun and nothing more. A game of Monopoly, for example, can go on for hours so you definitely won’t run out of things to do. Just don’t get too competitive and end up fighting with your friends, okay?

Pitch a tent and spend a cosy night as you ring in the new year under the stars. Do this with your man for a romantic date or get a few friends together for a unique night out. You can even indulge in a few activities before the sun sets, like swimming or flying a kite. Or why not have a barbecue at one of the pits or you could choose the easy option and have dinner at one of the nearby eateries.
Camping is allowed at places such as East Coast Park, Pasir Ris Park and West Coast Park, check the National Parks website (www.nparks.gov.sg) for details. You need a camping permit so apply for one online in advance.

Invite the girls over and chill for a few hours while painting each others’ nails, trying out new face masks and relaxing with zen music. Make it a ‘no-man zone’ so you can keep it totally girly. It’ll also be a good time to catch up on all the gossip so use this night to bond with your girlfriends in a relaxing atmosphere.

You and your man could cuddle on the couch while enjoying your favourite sexy movies. Or get the girls over for a chick flick movie marathon. Stock up on ample amounts of popcorn and other snacks (it’s ok, calories don’t count on new year’s eve, we’ve checked!) and you’ll be seeing in 2018 in a slightly lazy but very happy way.

If you still want to party but don’t want to deal with the crowds in bars and clubs, have a private party in a limousine instead. There are a number of companies in Singapore that rent out limos for parties – a quick Google will lead you to them – so get a few friends together and split the cost for this. It’ll be a unique party for sure and a new year’s eve you won’t forget for a long time.

New year’s eve can be a stressful time for some people as there’s so much pressure to go out and do something – anything at all. But it’s okay not to make a big deal out of the 31st of December so if you want to stay at home and go to bed early, you really don’t have to make any excuses to anyone. Just do it!
