Tank throughout the years, as worn by these much-loved stars
Back in 1917, Louis Cartier, a horological enthusiast, was inspired by the first armoured vehicles in military history used on the Western Front. He then translated the war machine into watch form, which is what we know of today as the Tank.
As this highly coveted timepiece hits its 100 year milestone, we’ve compiled a list of stars who have been seen wearing the breathtaking watch.
Europe’s most prominent actor and on-screen sex symbol in the 1960s, and French film-maker respectively. The pair was photographed wearing matching Tank Arrondie watches on the set of Un Flic in 1972. Talk about twinning!
The American actor, famous for appearing natural and authentic on screen, was a favourite amongst both men and women. He was pictured wearing the Tank Basculante in the 1930s which complemented his suit well.
Nicknamed “Black Jack”, senior United States Army officer John J. Pershing was one of the first few people to wear the watch. It is said that Louis Cartier gifted the general with a prototype of the timepiece himself. But, we’ll never know for sure.
Also known as the “Latin lover” amongst his fans, Rudolph Valentino was a pop icon as he starred in well-known silent films. While filming The Son of the Sheik in 1926, he was allowed to wear his Tank watch.
