5 biggest trends from Milan Fashion Week FW ‘20 you need to know

Here’s how you should be wearing your dresses, jackets and blouses next season

As always, Milan lives up to all expectations in delivering maximalist glamour, awe-inspiring statement numbers that defy fashion codes time and time again, and industry-shaking headlines.

This season, Prada held a surprise press conference announcing Raf Simons’ appointment as the new co-creative director. Joining forces with the brilliant Miuccia Prada, Simons’ groundbreaking amalgamation with the iconic Italian fashion house stirred plenty of excitement and buzz to say the least.

On to the trends: noteworthy recurring themes we saw echoing throughout the runways included chic fringing which gave slim knitted dresses at Bottega Veneta a breezier feel, contrasting soft fleecy collars on winter jackets (ala Missoni, Tod’s, Philosophy di Lorenzo and more), and bulky belted jackets from Prada that were very ‘80s.

Check out the must-know trends of MFW below.

5 biggest trends from Milan Fashion Week FW ‘20 you need to know
Fluffy collars: Gucci

What’s a winter coat without a little cozy element thrown into it? For FW ‘20, designers are overlaying the collars and lapels of their jackets and coats with contrasting soft shearling and plush fleece. Gucci had a luxe double-breasted black coat with white synthetic fur trimming the collar, sleeves and hem.

No21’s take on the trend included a sequinned lilac and emerald jacket with oversized soft beige fur collars teamed with a matching pencil skirt.

Fluffy collars: Philosophy di Lorenzo

Philosophy di Lorenzo absolutely killed it with a pretty baby blue quilted jacket that was finished with the most magnificent supersized fleece lapels in a rosy beige hue.

Bulbous shoulders: Moschino

Given the industry’s unrelenting adoration for first – the puffy sleeve, and what came next – the balloon sleeve, it comes as no surprise that we’re graduating on bigger, more voluminous proportions. Delivering a clever interpretation of whimsical Marie Antoinette-styling, Moschino had a series of sumptuous elaborate pieces with big burgeoning shoulders.

Bulbous shoulders: Fendi

Fendi offered a novel take on the trend with structured and elongated sleeves that resemble inflated balloon tubes.

Philosophy di Lorenzo also came in with a twist, sending a lavender hued suit that had grand pale pink feathers adorning the sleeves in such massive proportions, it resembled a majestic set of wings.

Big belted jackets: Tods

Grab your largest puffer jacket available, and cinch it with your slimmest waist belt.

Big belted jackets: Prada

Experimenting with oversized proportions with their outerwear this season, designers from Tod’s to Prada and Alberta Ferreti are giving more than one meaning to the term “power dressing” – now you can take up space while feeling your most confident in thick puffy jackets sporting oversized silhouettes.

Snap tight at the waist with a belt to create that flattering hourglass figure, these jackets are a key item to own for FW ‘20.

Fringe benefits: Bottega Veneta

By far the most major noteworthy trend of the season thus far is fringing. Imbuing stuffy fall and winter pieces with a more lightweight, relaxed bohemian sensibility, fringe detailing finished the hemlines of knitted dresses, bags, skirts and even heavy shearling coats (courtesy of Bottega Veneta).

The standout trend appeared next to tailored belted suit jackets at Prada.

Fringe benefits: Salvatore Ferragamo

Add drama to a black midi tube dress with accordion chain-like fabric manipulation at Salvatore Ferregamo.

Head-to-toe leather: Jil Sander

We saw leather (both faux and real) taking over the London runways, and now it’s even dominated the Milan fashion shows as well. A strong focus on leather co-ords and one-pieces were evident from the collective designer presentations. Jil Sander showcased a buttery deep brown button-up top with low-hanging balloon sleeves and a matching pair of sleek relaxed-fit leather trousers.

Fendi’s black leather jumpsuit, crafted with a corseted bodice, had a total badass Matrix moment on the runway.

And Salvatore Ferragamo’s rustic red pinafore-type jumpsuit with buckled straps, teamed with a matching red leather top-handle bag and red pointed toe booties, was the absolute crème de la crème of the leather trend du jour.
