T / Trends & Tips

5 simple ways to rock the S/S’19 yellow/gold trend without looking gaudy

Say no to all things drab and choose an optimistic shade like sunshine yellow instead, because we all need a little positivity in our lives

5 simple ways to rock the S/S'19 yellow/gold trend without looking gaudy
5 ways to incorporate the gold/yellow SS19 trend into your everyday wear

The sun’s out — on the runways at least. A deluge of yellow — ranging from soft, pastel tones to punchy, attention-grabbing ones and orange and gold-infused shades — have been spotted in the Spring/Summer 2019 shows. Labels such as Versace, Escada, Oscar de la Renta, Sonia Rykiel and Carolina Herrera took the cheery hue to the next level, incorporating it in trench coats, flowy dresses, tops, accessories and more.

A further sign that it’s a key trend: Pantone announced that a marigold called Aspen Gold is the yellow for the season, ahead of Fashion Week.

We must be honest though, yellow can be a daunting colour to pull off. Besides the fact that it’s an in-your-face statement-making shade (which makes those who prefer a more muted look balk), there is also a myth that Asians can’t pull off yellow because it can make you look sallow. But we disagree. You can wear yellow — but the shade that’s complimentary to you will depend on your skin tone. If you have a cool skintone, you’d suit cooler yellows such as neon and pale yellow, while if you have a warm skintone, you would look good with brighter and more orange-leaning yellows. Neutral skin tones of course, have the luxury of opting for either.

Long story short, there’s no need to avoid yellow entirely. We love this bold and vivacious hue, which is why we’ve gathered five easy peasy ways you can incorporate it into your everyday wardrobe.

1. Wear it as a dress for work or weekends

This is of course, the easiest and most fuss-free way to wear yellow. We especially love this pale yellow Alice + Olivia number, not just because of its sexy cold-shoulder and v-neck design, but also because the cascading ruffles give off an air of ethereal femininity. This dress will look amazing with a pair of gold sandals during a weekend date night.

This long-sleeve number from Zara will keep you warm in your frigid air-conditioned office; at the same time, it won’t suffocate you during lunch hour when you step out, thanks to its lightweight and breathable crochet pattern. Another style tip: Pair this with a chunky black belt to up your style ante and to add that cinched hourglass shape.

Who says yellow has to be jarring? It can be soothing on the eye too, if you go for this pale yellow Mango skirt and match it with a neutral-coloured linen or silk blouse. Finish with a pair of dainty stud earrings and nude pumps for a monochrome effect.

Here’s an easy work outfit for you: Take the black knit jumper that you love so much, tuck it into this leather Tibi skirt and finish with a pair of black boots. We especially love the belted detail and asymmetric cut — they make this already eye-catching skirt even more unique.

Whether you have on a simple LBD or a t-shirt and jeans combo, you can easily jazz up the look with a statement outwear piece, such as this bejewelled Caroline Herrera coat. Keep the matching accessories to a minimum and let the blazer shine. Wear with velvet heeled pumps and a quilted crossbody bag, and hit the dance floor.

Rain jackets are no longer aesthetically displeasing. In fact, those in the market these days are functional yet fashionable, but are often overlooked as another way to amp up your outfit. Pick this H&M iteration, which is chic and a great reason to leave the bulky umbrella at home.
