Will you rock these outrageous SS18 accessories?
To dare, or not to dare?

Just when we thought the accessories at Fashion Week couldn’t get any weirder, we were once again put in our place by the glamorous, but oh-so-wacky world of fashion. We’re no longer referring to pared down, supersized jewellery (which, to be honest, are totally gorgeous and fit for everyday wear) anymore — we’re talking out-of-proportion sunhats, deformed sports shoes, and eye catching socks you’d be able to spot from a mile away.

These outfit toppers are outrageous, and we mean jaw-gaping, eyebrow-raising outrageous.

One thing’s for sure though; they’ll firmly imbed you on either side of the proverbial fence — you’ll either love em’, or you’ll hate em’. Click on to see the reigning outlandish accessories of the season ahead. Be warned: cringing and grimacing may ensue…

Dramatic sun hats

Don’t wear this when you’re commuting to work unless you want a hundred pairs of eyes in the MRT to roll towards the ceiling. All jokes aside, these giant sunhats would certainly shield your face — and entire body — from UV rays effectively, so that’s a plus point.

Across the SS18 runways, wide-brim sunhats were reimagined with surreal, XXXL proportions; they were so big, we wondered how the models didn’t topple over as they walked. Jacquemus had an almost sculptural curved-brim hat, Christian Siriano veered on the safe side with classy flat brims, and Badgley Mischka kept its hats raw with wild, unfinished hems.

Skinny neon belts

These one-inch belts are by far the most wearable accessory on our list — they can be easily paired with anything, from tailored blazers to evening gowns.

Alessandra Rich, Hermes and Tibi have all jumped aboard the neon belt train with eye-catching iterations of their own. Sleek, skinny and incredibly stylish, these SS18 must-haves have got our seal of approval.

Orthopedic shoes

If we’re being frank, these athletic shoes look like they’ve just freshly emerged from Doctor Frankenstein’s castle.

Chunky, borderline-deformed shoes are catching on quick amongst luxury brands, with high-flyers such as Louis Vuitton and Loewe gaining in on the trend. Once vilified for having zero aesthetic appeal, these rubbery, sporty-soled kicks will soon be a mainstay in the high fashion circle.

PVC boots

Glitter sock boots may be the IT shoe of the FW17 season, but it’s clear (pun fully intended) that these transparent gogo boots are ready to take it from here.

These see-through plastic boots may appear impractical (we’d imagine them to be a sauna of sorts for sweaty feet) and slightly absurd, but hey, they look incredibly chic and modish. To pull these off, perhaps pair them with some really cute socks — and bring a can of foot spray with you.

Travel tags & neck pillows
image

At the Maison Margiela show, priority boarding tags hung from garments, bags and even models’ hair alike.  First class boarding tags piled atop boarding passes and were stuffed under headpieces or strapped onto bag straps.

We even spotted a bag abundantly decorated with baggage barcode stickers. Then there were the fabulously dead handy neck pillows; luxe, squishy and also simultaneously relatable for us 24/7-languid working women. Our sore necks will rejoice in the name of fashion.

Insanely embellished sandals
image

Whether they’re embellished with multicoloured raffia string-looking fringe or jelly-like acrylic flowers, these easy-on-the-ankle sandals are as flamboyant as they are mesmerising.

We get the appeal of richly decorated accessories — especially when they are decorated with knick knacks, everyday objects and even toys evocative of our childhood. These footwear aren’t afraid to veer on the path of the unconventional; and we’re all for them.

Ornamented sunglasses
image

The glasses seen at the Dolce and Gabbana SS18 show were a total treat. In fact, we never knew we needed faux fingers circling the outline of our peepers in the form of sunglasses until now. So take a bow, D&G, for these fun-loving shades were a successful, vibrant imagery of how you march to your own spirited drum.

The rim of these — very fashionable — glasses were covered in stiff sunburst fringing and costume jewels to form really novel items such as fruits, poker cards, and even (erm) fingers. We think they’d make for excellent vacation accessories.

Quirky socks with heels
image

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen brightly coloured socks (mis)matched with elegant heels. Once again a ubiquitous sight across the Fashion Week board, this unlikely duo proves to be sartorial force to be reckoned with.

Sent down the runway of Miu Miu, Balenciaga and Undercover, the sock-and-heel pairing is a perennial trend that’s not going away anytime soon.
