According to global fashion platform Lyst, a generation of new and old stars have been creating some serious impact on luxury and everyday brands since the start of 2020. The brand’s “Power Dressers” report has named and ranked what it believes to be the top five emerging celebrities whose personal style choices are generating searches, sales, news coverage and social media over the last 12 months.
After opening this year’s Grammy Awards in a full leather Gucci outfit and a seventies throwback feather boa, we’re not surprised that Harry Styles has made it to the top of Lyst’s Power Dressers chart. The singer made waves when he released his hit single “Watermelon Sugar” — exuding the perfect summer style inspiration — and created more buzz when he released “Golden”. Yes, we’re talking about his blue and turquoise blazers that have seen an increase in page views by 52% on Lyst, as well as an increase in the number of searches for yellow bucket hats that have increased by 92%.
After releasing ‘Black Is King’, an American musical film and visual album directed, written, and executive produced by Beyonce herself, many sought after her Marine Serre catsuit outfit that was featured in the film. In less than 48 hours since its initial debut, the French brand saw a 426% spike in searches, with over 3,000 shoppers who looked for the “Crescent Moon Top”.
One of her other outfits that saw many searches was also her Alessandra Rich suit which she wore in one of her Instagram posts. Here, the brand saw an increase of 78% in searches in September.
Kim Namjoon, otherwise known by his stage name, Rap Monster from K-pop’s biggest boyband, BTS, is the third most powerful fashion celebrity influencer of 2020 according to Lyst. As an influential member of the group and also the leader, Rap Monster is also known for his unique sense of fashion. After he was spotted in New York in a white turtleneck and a white jacket, searches for similar menswear pieces spiked by 67% in that week alone.
After her speech condemning sexism in U.S. Congress in July 2020, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also made headlines for her statement-worthy red suit which saw a 74% increase in searches in the following five days.
American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer, Travis Scott has been known for his music and his great sense of style — mixing streetwear with high fashion — easily becoming a streetwear icon with sneaker partnerships with Nike Air Force 1, Nike Air Jordan and Helmut Lang that sell out within seconds. Back in January 2020, when he announced that he was doing a collaboration with Nike, the sportswear brand saw a spike in searches by up to 128% month-on-month, while the search term “Travis Scott x Nike” saw an increase by up to 168% in 24 hours upon the release of the Nike Air Max 270 sneaker.
