Attracting the biggest stars from around the world, the Cannes Film Festival is arguably the most prominent film festival. This year marks the 74th edition, after last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic.
There wasn’t as much Asian representation as compared to the previous years, but the Asian celebs who were present delivered the glitz and glamour we’d expected, for sure. Ahead, the best-dressed Asian celebs at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.
Accessories make an outfit. Don’t believe? Just take a look at Chinese and Xue Yun (Absence) actress Li Meng’s outfit. She wore a dramatic and colourful Bulgari poncho necklace from the brand’s Cinemagia collection with her comparatively simple, soft yellow off-shoulder gown from Yanina Couture. The necklace features over 200 pieces of gemstones and 80 diamonds.
Juxtaposed with her structured boyish crop, Chinese and Gaey Wa’r (Streetwise) actress Huang Miyi sported a soft, flowy mauve Dior gown with nude open-toe stilettoes. Accessories were kept minimal with hoop earrings, a necklace and a ring.
Korean model Park Soo Joo is no stranger to the red carpet, and she sure knows how to pull off a show-stopping look. Attending as one of the faces of L’Oreal Paris, Park Soo Joo dressed in a killer all-black Chanel outfit that used lace to play with translucency.
Invited by the L’Oreal Paris team, Gemma Chan graced her first-ever Cannes red carpet with a warm nude-coloured outfit from Valentino that had a sparkly sequinned top and high-waisted pencil skirt with ruffled details at the back. Her look was accented with Swarovski jewels and Gianvito Rossi heels.
In a sea of colourful red carpet dresses, Japanese and Drive My Car actress Reika Kirishima stood out with her clean and crisp Valentino dress, featuring unique laser-cut patterns. The styling was completed with matching white pumps, earrings and a dainty gold watch.
Dressed in a purplish-brown oversized blazer and sharp wide-legged trousers, we loved Japanese and Drive My Car actress Tôko Miura’s daring take on red carpet fashion. She played up her androgynous look with slicked-back hair, contrasting it with drop earrings and a bejewelled choker.
The final of the three Drive My Car actresses who attended Cannes, Chinese actress Sonia Yuan (above, far right) wore a white and black Artclub dress that featured an asymmetric neckline and a thigh-high slit. Georg Jensen accessories completed her look.
With the goal of introducing and placing Indian fashion on the global stage, fashion blogger Masoom Minawala Mehta wore a custom silver Manish Malhotra sari together with Boucheron jewellery. The sari was made with shiny sequins that would have danced in natural lighting.
With her ash-purple ruffled dress from Azaaraz by Shumie against black suits, Bangladeshi and Rehana Maryam Noor actress Azmeri Haque Badhon stood out from her male companions. According to Badhon’s Instagram caption, the dress had special meaning as it “showcases our pride, the delicate fabric, Muslin and Bangladeshi exquisite karigori”. The styling was finished with silver jewellery, sandals and a clutch.
Indian model and activist Nidhi Sunil was another of L’Oreal’s invitees (the company is one of the sponsors of Cannes) to the event. She wore a dreamy white gown from Maison Rabih Kayrouz that accentuated her beautiful melanated skin, alongside Chopard jewellery and Roger Vivier heels.
Looking to spread a little sunshine, New York-based fashion influencer Jessica Wang turned up in a bright strapless canary yellow Tony Ward Couture gown that featured a dramatic silhouette and train. Her jewellery of choice was a pair of long drop earrings from Messika Jewellery.
