Fashion wants to play, and it’s serious about it. The recent crop of fashion items, from luxury brands to high street brands, have simply got us scratching our heads. As always, the best reactions are always from the internet. Amid all this brouhaha, we say: To each his own.
Umm… yes. We wish to bring your attention to these see-through jeans that immediately prompted us to write an open letter to Topshop. As the brand is fully aware, this item that costs $126 is “guaranteed to get people talking”. Topshop suggests we take the look to the extreme with a bikini and sequin jacket, or dressed down, layered under an oversized jumper or asymmetric hem dress.
In light of our scorching weather, we say wear these jeans at your own risk. We can’t even imagine perspiring buckets with a layer of plastic sticking to our legs like adhesive. And guess what? They’re sold out. We wonder if they’ll be back in stock, and should you decide to get your hands on them (round of applause), remember – wipe clean only.
All’s well until you notice that the zips run high…way too high. Hats off for pushing sartorial boundaries, butt you may also want to take a moment to think about public decency. We don’t know about you, but these jeans would get us all paranoid about someone creeping up on us and undoing the zips.
We rubbed our eyes several times and yes, it’s real. So fashion has evolved from crop tops to bralettes and… extreme crop tops that don’t even cover your bra. Ridiculous length aside, the piece is see-through, which is plain baffling. This top (we need another name for this) was created for Urban Outfitters by label Out From Under, which describes itself as channeling “counterculture within super seductive and ultra-feminine forms”. The item has been removed from the website, but we’ll remember it in the words of Twitter user @Jennrubenstein: “That is a necklace.”
Here’s some heavy duty fashion. Kylie Jenner sported WXYZ Jewelry’s golden brass Gio Bra in her 2017 calendar, and the piece was also seen on Nicki Minaj’s backup dancers. Wear this fierce accessory-lingerie hybrid over a T-shirt, dress, bra – or if you’re up for it, just your beautiful skin.

Is it just us or this sock sandal is reminiscent of a mannequin’s leg? We could close one eye to the socks-with-heels trend, but when they do it all for you, complete with a latex lining, it’s just taking it too far. Some, however, call the sock sandals a life-saver: “My feet think they are wearing a boot, but my mind thinks I’m wearing a sandal! Best of both worlds! Win win!” Sarcastic or not, you decide.
Now where have we seen this bag before? A certain Swedish furniture store, maybe. It’s not just the blanket bag – Balenciaga has had a history of drawing inspiration from everyday items, like the “Thailand” bag. The best part about this ripoff has got to be Ikea’s hilarious tongue-in-cheek response. The company released an advertisement on how to identify an original Ikea Frakta bag.
Say hello to the $5,153 leather tote inspired by the everyday classic blanket bags. This bag sure made it big (pun intended) on the internet, with people calling it hilariously stupid and pointing out that it’s basically something we can easily find at the pasar malam. A Straits Times journalist even made her own blanket bag with materials bought in Chinatown for less than $40. An extravagant take on our grandmother’s PVC bags storing floral-print comforters? Thanks, but no thanks.
This is something that hits close to home, and Twitter user @lackadaisier best sums it up: “Damn we Asians been wearing these slippers to the toilet forever”. We’re not sure what to feel about our good old $5 plastic slippers making it to the world stage. These waterproof slippers sure have come a long way from the wet market and roadside stalls. The Fenty Puma slides are slated to be released this summer and the price is unavailable, but it shouldn’t be far off from the bow slides which cost $125. But why RiRi, why?

Check out this shirt from Asos’ She’s With the Band festival collection. If you have random fashion fantasies, let draping tulle across your band tee be one of them. We may not have Coachella, but you can rock this piece at, say, the F1 concert – you’re bound to make heads turn.
