Having attended Singapore fashion brand Exhibit’s runway shows for the past two years, I was surprised to find deep rich hues dominating the collection; and that’s not a negative.
It was as though a metamorphosis had taken place; the brand’s usual fail-safe monochrome palette was interrupted by brilliant hues of purple, copper, emerald and even pink.
Exhibit’s designer Yoyo Cao called the collection ‘Dark romance’. No stranger to the international street style fashion scene, her ability to mix on-trend runway pieces with wearable high-street labels gives her an edge when it comes to creating an Insta-worthy covetable mix of current fashion trends all in one collection.
Yoyo says that, for her, the favourite part of being a designer is that she gets to design what she wants to wear. This collection was perhaps, a reflection and a showcase of her own chameleon-like style.
Lush crushed velvets, sultry satins and tailored silhouettes were the recurring themes and their appeal was that they seemed effortless. The current season’s de rigueur styles of extended sleeves and slip dresses were also present.
For me, the brand truly stood out in its erudite use of colour. By taking a leap into vivid colour and eschewing her usual black and white, Yoyo was able to highlight the luxurious fabrics that she was very proud of.
I believe that these clothes were designed to make everyday life a little easier, a lot more stylish and more colourful (literally) for lots of women.
