Happy Birthday Jeanette Aw! Here’s how you can look as polished and sleek as her

It’s Jeanette Aw’s birthday on June 28. To celebrate that, we have rounded up some of her most stylish moments where you can learn a tip, or two

From her early role as the naive Mo Jingjing in Holland V (2003), to her blockbuster role as Yueniang/Juxiang in The Little Nyonya (2008) and Zhao Fei’er in The Dream Makers series (2013 and 2015), Jeanette Aw has blossomed into one of the most prominent actresses in Singapore.

Did you know though, that the celebrated thespian is also a trained ballerina and has her own production company Picturesque Films, on top of being an award-winning actress and director? Besides the list of accolades, Jeanette is also known for her impeccable style, whether she’s dressed up or down. In celebration of her birthday June 28, let’s cop some style tips from Jeanette.

Happy Birthday Jeanette Aw! Here's how you can look as polished and sleek as her
1. When in doubt, go for a statement suit
custom

One easy way to ensure that your outfit pop is to don a bold two-piece suit. Here, Jeanette went with a vermilion red pant-suit, which we believe does turn heads. She wore it with a pair of black combat boots, but you can rock it with black pumps instead when wearing it to work.

I play many roles – daughter, sister, actor, scriptwriter, director, pâtissière, illustrator – and I believe one common trait that connects them all is that of a strong woman. #McQueenEyewear

2. Complement neutral colours with more neutral colours
custom

The two common colours that people normally pair together to achieve the “monochrome look” is black and white. However, Jeanette went for a different approach. She wore a grey muscle tank (which we believe is from The Frankie Shop) with a pair of white high-waisted belted pants, breaking the aforementioned norm. Ultimately, she still looks refined and polished.

3. Jazz up your monochrome outfits
image

We love a monochrome outfit, especially one that’s vibrant and eye-catching, like the brick-orange blazer-skirt combo that Jeanette has on. Jeanette has also adeptly avoided the one flaw that monochrome outfits tend to have — they can look a tad flat and one-dimensional.

She played with different textures, pairing a top that has a lapel collar and oversized buttons with a pleated skirt made with a different textured material. She then sealed the deal with a belt that further bid monotony goodbye, thanks to its black clasp.

4. Put a tie on it
image

Your man’s wardrobe is a treasure trove. The next time you’re heading out the door and need a quick outfit, don’t just grab a shirt. A tie will give your look a touch of geek chic — especially so if you pair the ensemble with some tortoiseshell glasses.

Or elevate the look like what Jeanette did — she paired her white shirt and skinny tie with a high-waisted ruffled skirt and a Dior Saddle belt and black boots — a look that can easily land her a front row seat at a Fashion Week runway show.

5. Add some colour
image

When you think of adding a pop of colour to an outfit, it’s usually a brightly-coloured bag, accessories, or even a striking top. If you want to change things up a little, opt for a pair of so-bright-it-hurts shoes instead, just like Jeanette.

We’re totally digging her fluorescent yellow sneakers — not only will it stop traffic, it also brightened up her white shirt and jeans combo and gave it a quirky flair.

6. A proper bag never fails
image

Jeans and a white t-shirt is an unbeatable combo when you “have nothing to wear” or when you just don’t feel like sweating it over your outfit that day. Even Jeanette knows that. But don’t just end there.

Take a leaf out of her book by giving that safe ensemble a cool centrepiece — in her case, a Bottega Veneta leather bag. We love her choice of a soft orange-brown and red leather piece, complete with its trademark weave pattern on the strap. Go bold or go home.

7. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colours
image

Jeanette loves her neutrals, and is often seen in shades of brown, black beige and white. No surprise, they’re fuss free and easy to style when you’re off for a quick errand run. But Jeanette is not afraid to dress up her looks with colours as well, when the situation calls for it.

Whether it is an orange skirt with a black top, or a red puffer jacket over a black skirt, or this seafoam green shirt dress that she matched with a sky blue belt to cinch her waist. Sometimes, a pop of colour is just what you need to command attention from the crowd.

8. Dress for your body type
image

We’re all guilty of this: Picking outfits that caught our eye without any regard to whether they suit our body type or not. Learn from Jeanette, who dresses impeccably to flatter her figure.

Take this red plaid dress. Its black shoulder bib panel gives the petite Jeanette an illusion of wider shoulders, while the ribbed waist-cinching detail creates an hourglass silhouette. The checkered print also emphasises Jeanette’s girlish personality.

9. Keep it in the family
image

It’s clear Jeanette was feeling pink that day. But instead of going all out with the same shade, she played around with different fabrics and textures with hues that are within the same family, pairing a sheer blush pink top with a heftier salmon tweed skirt.

The result? A cohesive look that’s feminine too.
