Turtlenecks

Street style trend alert: Turtlenecks were absolutely everywhere at Paris Fashion Week – and before you scoff and say it’s absolutely impractical to wear them in Singapore, why not work them into your tropical wardrobe? Don’t let our humid weather deter you from wearing turtlenecks; opt for lighter fabrics instead of chunky knits.

We know turtlenecks can be a rather risky choice because of the much dreaded “floating head” effect. One way to overcome this is to look for funnel necks, which are a slightly wider version of turtle necks so you don’t look suffocated. Another tip: Emphasise your features by pulling your hair back and going for a bold lippie.

The nautical look

Yoyo Cao looks mighty fine in this nautical look, complete with her hair tucked into the turtleneck. Simply tuck your top into a pair of high waist pants with metal buttons, throw on a cute beret and you’re all set. You can always opt for a less dramatic turtleneck, of course.

Under a plaid shirt

You can never go wrong with plaid outerwear. Gigi Hadid looks effortlessly cool in this getup; we’re picturing ripped jeans and boots to complete your chic outfit.

With a denim skirt

This is one #OOTD that’s extremely versatile. We’re loving the unique mint green turtleneck, which gels perfectly with a denim skirt, which in turn packs a punch with its front slit. To add an extra dose of character, put on a pair of leopard print block heels.

Under a slip dress

The trend of layering slip dresses isn’t going away anytime soon, but why not switch things up by wearing a sparkly turtleneck underneath? This jumper with a metallic finish exudes subtle glamour, and when paired with a midi slip dress, you’ll be the epitome of casual-meets-dressy.

Under a maxi dress

Wow, Yoyo Cao is really working it – a black-and-white ensemble will never be the same when you layer a white dress over a black turtleneck and pants. Be sure to choose a dress that has a slit or one that you can unbutton for the same effect, so you can flaunt it as you sashay down the streets.

With a gilet
image

Try wearing a gilet as a dress – it’s of a comfortable length and the fabric is flowy for maximum circulation of cooling air. Layer it over a sleeveless turtleneck to beat the heat and look extra put together. If you want more definition, feel free to cinch your waist with a belt. A pair of light pink sandals will add a sweet finishing touch.

With a denim jacket

Doesn’t Selena Gomez’s outfit just shout chill? Amp up the cosy factor by throwing on an oversized denim jacket, bun up your hair and don’t forget those striking red shades.

Suit up

For a smart suit with a twist, swap the classic white shirt with a turtleneck. Who says suits have to be boring? This washed blue coordinated look is a great conversation starter, and will probably also earn a nod of approval from your boss.

Keep your turtleneck understated and go for prints on the bottom for a super sleek look. Incorporate a pop of colour with some bright heels or a neon clutch, and you’re ready to impress.
