Fit for a queen

Much like celebrities and style influencers, members of royal families worldwide are often looked upon for their fashion choices and sartorial prowess. But while they can’t dress too edgy, alternative or avant-garde, it doesn’t mean their outfits are boring either.

Classy, elegant and poised are just some adjectives to describe their styles. So if you’re looking to cop some tips from them (after all, who doesn’t want to look classy, elegant and poised?), we’ve rounded up 10 fashion labels that are loved by royalty.

1. Philip Treacy
image

If you’ve caught any of media coverage surrounding royal weddings — whether about Kate Middleton and Prince William or Meghan Markle and Prince Harry — you’ll find many dramatic and fantastical hats perched atop the heads of the guests, including Queen Elizabeth herself. Odds are, more than a few of them are made by Irish milliner (hat-maker) Philip Treacy. Described as perhaps the greatest living milliner, he has worked with fashion houses like Chanel and Givenchy, and is associated with celebrities who are often spotted in his whimsical creations.

2. Givenchy

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has worn Givenchy on many occasions. The most prominent one was the pure white boat-neck wedding gown that she wore to wed Prince Harry. Markle also enjoys a close relationship with Givenchy’s head designer Clare Waight Keller. In fact, Markle made a surprise appearance at the 2018 British Fashion Awards to honour Keller with the British Designer of the Year Womenswear Award.

3. Ole Lynggaard

Ole (say: O-la) Lynggaard is a Danish luxury jeweller known for being able to capture the realism of Mother Nature in precious metals and stones. It is also an appointed jeweller to the royal Danish court. According to jewellery retailer Shreve, Crown Princess Mary was looking for a new tiara and Lynggaard’s intricate creation, called the Midnight Tiara, caught her fancy (pictured with it; she’s in the emerald dress). Princess Mary continues to wear Ole Lynggaard jewellery to many social events.

4. Alexander McQueen

Much like the friendship between Markle and Keller, Alexander McQueen’s head designer Sarah Burton enjoys that partnership with Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge. Likewise, Burton designed Middleton’s wedding gown and the duchess has continued to wear many of her designs on official business. In fact, Middleton doesn’t shy away from repeating outfits — she has reworn many of McQueen’s creations on multiple events. Definitely no points for guessing Middleton’s favourite designer.

5. Dior

Previously known as “Chouchou”, Dior’s famous handbag, the Lady Dior, was catapulted to fame by the late Princess Diana. She was often seen with the elegant bag with its square compact frame and signature quilted leather. The bag was later renamed Lady Dior in her honour. Today, the handbag remains an icon for the French label and bag lovers.

6. Hermès

Mention Hermès and you’ll probably hear of the Kelly bag. But did you know that the name was derived from the late American actress-turned-Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly? A fashion icon in her own right, Kelly made the bag famous when she toted the bag in public multiple times and used it to hide her baby bump. The Kelly bag, alongside the Birkin, remains one of the brand’s bestsellers.

7. Maje

Known for its feminine silhouettes that sport unique, thoughtful twists, Maje has quickly found a following among royal figures despite being a young label. One of them is Queen Letizia of Spain, pictured here in its green floral number. Another is Princess Eugenie of York, who wore a yellow dress from the label earlier in June.

Zara is known for its trendy selections that are accompanied with wallet-friendly price tags. So it comes as no surprise that even royals love the Spanish label. Fans include Queen Rania of Jordan, Queen Letizia of Spain (pictured in a tweed Zara dress), the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton and Princess Sofia of Sweden.

9. Stewart Parvin

While Queen Elizabeth’s dressing might not have changed much throughout her reign, one thing’s for sure — her style is elegant and classy, very much befitting of her title. If you’re looking to cop her look, head to Stewart Parvin, the royal couturier. The Queen has worn many of his creations, including this famous lime green number that created quite a buzz on the Internet.

Valentino’s designs always have a feminine flair to them, which is why we’re not surprised that many royals adore his pieces. Fans of the luxury Italian label include Crown Princess of Greece Marie-Chantal (pictured here with founder Valentino Garavani), Queen Maxima of The Netherlands and Princess Charlene of Monaco.
