Streetwear is a trend that will probably be around for at least another decade – or more. After all, designer brands have been constantly pushing the trend and releasing new styles of designer sneakers time and again, with some even collaborating with major streetwear labels and style icons.
A prime example: Dior’s recent partnership with Nike, which sees the latter’s reissue of the iconic Air Jordan 1 fashioned in smooth leather, and in the French maison’s classic monogram and baby blue and grey shades. And then there’s Fendi’s California Sky capsule collection with visual artist Joshua Vides, which, naturally, included sneakers.
More recently, one of Moncler Genius’ designers, Hiroshi Fujiwara of Fragment, has collaborated with Converse. This collection comprises the latter’s iconic Chuck 70 sneakers in black and white.
Even if you’re not a fan of streetwear, you simply can’t ignore sneakers. They are so versatile that they can be worn with almost anything. Here are 13 sneaker styles to suit everything from your casual Friday #ootd to a hearty weekend brunch with your girlfriends or partner.
When two of the most coveted brands in luxury and sportswear come together, you’d better sit up. This is the third time that Prada and Adidas are collaborating – the first, in December 2019, was an all-white Superstar sneaker and calf leather bowling bag set that quickly flew off the shelves, while the second, sees Prada’s reinterpretation of the adidas Superstar. This time, adidas brings its expertise into the world of Prada. Inspired by a blend of the new AC75 Luna Rossa boat as well as other Prada and adidas sneakers, the A+P LUNA ROSSA 21 sneaker brings a more futuristic feel that’s sleek, lightweight and functional.
Made with PRIMEGREEN — also known as a series of high-performance recycled materials — the sneaker delivers flexible and breathable support while preventing water from penetrating the silhouette. It’s also crafted for the sport of sailing and also features a perforated BOOST midsole that provides elevated protection, durability and freedom of movement to enhance your performance.
The new A+P LUNA ROSSA 21 will be available from 9 December 2020, at Prada boutiques at Marina Bay Sands and ION Orchard, and online on prada.com and adidas.com.
V.I.Ps (by that, we mean Big Bang fans), get your wallets ready because G-Dragon is collaborating with Nike once again for a sneaker collab. Last year, the Big Bang leader and the sports brand launched Nike Air Force 1 “Para-noise” to much fanfare. This year, they’re launching the same sneakers, albeit in a reverse colour scheme: the white upper gives way to his painting. Of course, it will still retain its self-expressive character. In the words of G-Dragon, “Even though everything is uncertain these days, we shouldn’t stop expressing ourselves as the way we are, and creating our own world.”
The Nike x G-DRAGON AF1 “Para-noise” releases globally on November 25 on Nike.com for $279.
After collaborating with Dior, the next collab on Nike’s list is Comme des Garçons. The sportswear brand is collaborating with the fashion label for Nike Comme des Garçons Air Force 1, which was released in-store at Dover Street Market Singapore and on the DSMS E-SHOP on October 23. The silhouette is clean and simple, and is perfect for those who are looking for versatile shoes you can wear anywhere with any outfit. It comes in two colours, black and white, and are available in US women’s sizes 5-7.5 and men’s sizes 8-13.
Nike Comme des Garçons Air Force 1 retails for $470.
Palm Angels has once again collaborated with Clarks Originals for a new casule collection. This time round, Palm Angels’ Francesco Ragazzi reinterpreted Clarks Original’s iconic shoes, the Wallabee. The women’s version comes with rubber wedges and fringes for a fashionable spin on a classic design.
Looking to buy new sneakers? Great news: ASICS Sportstyle and Vivienne Westwood have once again joined hands to release a limited-edition GEL-KAYANO 26 series!
The collection has already made its debut during the Fall Winter 2020 show in Paris, and will be released in Singapore (and globally) on September 28.
The design is inspired by the original sack shoe, but given a futuristic twist with a semi – transparent mesh cover. It’s available in two colourways: black/black and birch/white.
We chatted with Vivienne Westwood’s global brand director, Christopher Di Pietro, about the collab.
What made you decide to work with ASICS again?
Following the success of our first collaboration of five limited edition sneakers in 2019 we were excited to work with ASICS again. It was interesting to be able to go beyond just recolouring an existing design but also to add our own design elements to the uppers.
ASICS is known for their performance sports shoes, while Vivienne Westwood is known more for bolder and quirky designs. How did you marry the two?
Vivienne Westwood & ASICS are brands that draw strength from long-lasting quality of design and materials, using innovation within their design. It is the sharing of these design philosophies which formed the inspiration for this collaboration. There are a lot of limitations when designing a sneaker but that is what is exciting in design. It makes you more creative. We took one of ASICS’s most popular styles and reworked it with something very iconic from our archive. The result is something completely new in the sneaker world.
What kind of person did you have in mind when you were designing the shoes?
With long lasting quality of materials in mind, the sneaker is for the customer who values both advanced performance and design innovation in their footwear. The black & white minimal colour palette means the sneaker works for both a sport or high-fashion look (as seen on the Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood AW20 Catwalk). It is a shoe for an advanced fashion customer but also for a younger sneakerhead that is looking for something a little different
ASICS X VIVIENNE WESTWOOD GEL-KAYANOTM 26 is priced at $399, and retails at ASICS.COM and Vivienne Westwood Anglomania Store, Scotts Square.
You can never go wrong with a pair of black sneakers – it’s perfect for work (on Fridays) and the weekends. Rock it with a black pantsuit for gravitas, or with a yellow summer frock for brunch. It’ll drop in stores on Sept 3.
We can never get enough of this colour combo (red, white and blue). Let this baby pop by wearing it with a black number, or with a maxi dress that sports the same three hues as the sneakers.
Do colourblocking in a more subtle way by pairing these with a grey off-shoulder top and a light denim jeans.
Let these be the centre of attention by complementing it with a simple a black or white dress.
If you’re brave enough, go all out and match this with all the other items from this bold collection.
The shades of brown go best with other neutral pieces, such as a camel two-piece suit.
Like a pair of nude heels, these will give you the illusion of longer legs.
Contrast this boyish-looking pair with a girlie number.
The red’s attention-grabbing enough, so tone it down with a black ensemble.
A tinge of yellow adds a dash of fun to this pair of neutral sneakers.
There’s a reason why the Triomphe is one of Celine’s most popular models: it’s classic, versatile, and makes for a solid investment.
Pastel is still on point, and this is the perfect pair to complete that sweet and girlie look.
