It’s sunny one second and pouring the next. What comes out of it? An unbelievably humid atmosphere which means moisture, which means… our absorbent clothes are about to get wrinkly. We know the struggle of wearing a really gorgeous top or dress, only to have its creases be the talk of the town instead of your outfit itself. So it’s time to take a cue from the red carpets (where creased gowns are an absolute no-no) and science.
Just like how a glass of water can keep a cake moist, our clothes absorb moisture from the air around us, causing them to be crinkly – these clothes are usually made of highly absorbent fabric like linen, cotton and rayon. So simply put, you’ll want to stay away from any absorbent fabric, or you could pick up a tip on how to keep it looking good.
On the other hand, you could also try a fabric softener designed to decrease the chances of wrinkling, or an anti-wrinkle spray – both are formulated with vegetable oils that allow fibres to slide closer to each other, helping them hold their shapes.
If you’d rather invest in crease-resistant pieces, what you do want to lean towards are synthetics like polyester, nylon and acrylic. Velvet works as well, but it’s probably not the coolest option for a daytime look. Lyocell, made from cellulose in wood, is a great alternative for cotton. Here are some of our crease-free picks.
