Check prints may well be obviously associated with Burberry, but it wasn’t just this powerhouse who graced the runways of S/S ‘18 with a variety of checked prints. From Balenciaga to Sonia Rykiel to Victoria Beckham – designers took on the classic check for this season and reworked it to make it modern, wearable and representative of their house style.
Given the immediate Burberry connotations when it comes to check, we often head straight towards heavy outerwear ideas, namely the trench. Whilst the classic trench coat is still this season’s big investment, we think you should push those thoughts aside and open your mind up! From tops to pants to dresses to skorts, heck, even to swimwear, there’s a huge array of pieces to buy now that will keep your wardrobe trend update in check.
We could continue to make ‘check’ puns but we don’t want you to check out on us, so we’ll stop.

We adore this check made from various shades of green, particularly as it’s on a jumpsuit – one of our favourite pieces to wear to the office when we’re beyond lazy and exhausted (so a Thursday morning then). You can pair it with so many different things, depending upon your mood and desired look – turtleneck or blouse or even crop top underneath, mules sandals heels or ankle boots on your feet.
Heck, you can even cinch it in with your favourite waist belt if you so desire. The fashionable world is your oyster with this garment.
Check jumpsuit, $89.90 from Zara.

Sporting the iconic Burberry check in navy, red and white colours, this below-the-knee wool skirt is a style statement in itself. With the flared fit and pleated A-line style, it’s extremely flattering to all figures. Not sure on what skirt styles are flattering for your body shape? here’s our busy girl’s guide to skirt styles, to help you on your way. The ‘100% wool’ is a slight issue in our weather as it will be a very thick and heavy piece, but to the office with the air con on all day means you can wear this for your working week.

We absolutely love this dress from the Hilfiger Collection. What’s not to like? Red is a very flattering colour for all skin tones, particularly this deep red spliced with dark blue in the check print. The studded details on the collar give it a designer-luxury feel, as does the velvet black waist tie – which also accentuates your waist too. That and the lower ruffle skirt line makes this a very girly shirt dress, which is rare considering most shirt dresses, by their very design, offer a more androgynous look.
Hilfiger Collection checked shirt dress, $346 from Farfetch.

Stylish, comfortable and well-fitted, these mohair checked trousers will be great for your work and play ensembles. The light soft beige, grey and yellow palette really delivers the ‘heritage’ vibe that we love the checked print for, so try teaming these with some tan accessories and perhaps a mis-matched check blazer too.
Irene straight-leg checked trousers, $306 from Farfetch.

Okay we’ll admit, these are pretty far out there and you’d need bags of confidence to rock them. That being said, they’re absolutely fantastic checked sneakers and will be extra comfortable on your feet, given that they’re made of leather with a fully lined rubber sole. If you’re not up for the red and blue, then there are a more demure pair of black and silver.
Marc Jacobs sneakers, US$254 from YOOX.

Aren’t these just fantastic? Zara have taken the usually muted palette of the classic check and turned it on its head with this bold and bright canary yellow. Funnily enough, bright colours are also big this spring so with these skorts you’re hitting two major trends in one. For less than $50, you can’t argue with that one bit.
Check skort, $45.90 from Zara.

Move aside heavy thick trench coats, this is more suitable for the Singapore tropical climate. If you enjoy pool time, beach time or any ‘chill’ spare time where you’re out in the sun, this checked bikini is a great addition for you. The Bardot style top could actually be teamed with a pair of high waisted shorts, doubling up as a crop top and a bikini too.
