7 best new products that get rid of pesky blackheads for good!

Cleansing well a day, keeps the blackheads at bay!

by Dawn Chen for SHAPE  /   September 25, 2017

Whenever an aesthetician or facialist ask me what my top skin concerns are, the answer is almost always “enlarged pores and blackheads.” And I’m sure I’m not alone in this. Getting rid of blackheads – and keeping them away – seems to be one of life’s biggest mysteries.

As a quick recap, blackheads are open comedones that are caused by an overproduction of oil in your follicles. The build-up of dirt and oil on the surface of your skin turns blackish when exposed to oxygen, resulting in those unsightly dots that usually cluster around your T-zone.

While blackheads are often recurring, you can minimise them by cleansing your skin thoroughly and gently, and following with a lightweight moisturiser that won’t send your skin’s oil production into overdrive. Scroll through for our favourite blackhead-busting products!

Laneige Mini Pore Heating and Clean Duo ($30)

This two-step kit consists of a heating gel to open up pores and soften hardened sebum and blackheads, and a clay mask to absorb excess sebum and slough away dead skin cells. Both are also formulated with botanicals to soothe skin irritation and keep oil production under control.

Garnier Pure Active Matcha Deep Clean Blackhead & Pore Purifying Clay Mask ($2 for two doses, leading pharmacies)
image

This mask warms up upon application to open your pores for a deeper cleanse. Kaolin clay helps to dissolve oil and remove dirt while matcha extract reduces inflammation and irritation on acne-prone skin.

Orbis Care-Na Hot Cool Gel ($23)
image

Designed with three types of sebum-removing ingredients, this pore-cleansing gel is meant to remove stubborn blackheads while remaining gentle on skin. When you first apply it, the gel will warm up to loosen and dislodge grime and dirt. Continue massaging this into skin for five to 10 seconds and it will eventually start to cool down, working as an astringent to shrink pores. Rinse off and follow with the rest of your skincare. Available from 22 September 2017.

Mamonde Pore Clean Clay Mask ($30, Sephora)

Perfect for those with rough and oily skin, this soft clay wash-off mask helps to deep cleanse pores without stripping skin of moisture. It contains chameleon plant extract to regulate sebum production.

Boscia Luminizing Black Mask ($51, Sephora)

If you love the triumphant feeling you get from seeing gunk come out of your pores, this peel-off mask is for you. Leave this on for 30 minutes or until it completely dries, then slowly and gently peel it off from the outer edges. The formula is also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants to visibly reduce hyperpigmentation for more radiant skin.

Decongest and brighten skin with this organic mask. It harnesses the power of soothing botanical ingredients like black elderflower to balance skin’s moisture levels for a clear, healthy complexion.
