When it comes to designer bag drops as per every new season, it seems like we’re always getting the same ol’ classic silhouette — a new iteration of the same-old-same-old but in new fabrications, colourways and sizes. Sure, classics are classics for a reason; we can’t deny the winning appeal of familiarity, but yet we find ourselves desiring something more. Something fresh. Something fun.
And boy, did we get what we wished for with Fall/Winter 2018’s newest bags.
From the return of Dior’s time-honoured Saddle bags from the ‘00s to Chanel’s generously sized 31, this season’s bags are novel and fast on their way to achieving ‘It-bag’ statuses. Check out the newest bag styles to know for the season.

The new Furla Mughetto, introduced for the Pre-Fall 2018 season, embodies the classic and innovative style principles that are Furla’s signature. Featuring a fun colour block patchwork design; white and black, or light blue, white and ochre, this new bag features contemporary and clean lines. It’s also functional and practical too; its body is gusted, making for a more spacious interior. What truly defines its look is the closure: a butterfly-inspired flower in enamelled metal, rhinestone and resin.
Saint Laurent’s new Vicky bag is a new style created by Anthony Vaccarello, and is one of the essential must-owns for Fall 2018. Made from quilted patent leather, it comes in either black or a hot red hue and has a handy sliding chain strap that can be adjusted so that you can wear it multiple ways. The flap monogram bag features quilted overstitching and interlocking YSL initials — the instantly recognisable emblem for the French house which was created in the 1960s.
Celine’s oversized Made in Tote is the brand’s key bag for the Fall 2018 season. Available in two materials (textile and leather) and two colourways (white with texts printed in black or pink), this bag is available in three sizes; large, medium and small. Featuring the brand’s logo and the words “Made in Italy”, the Made in Tote has a design that is as straightforward as its namesake with a trapezoid silhouette one might be familiar with due to the brand’s famed Big Bag.
Marni is launching the Caddy Soft Bag for its Pre Fall 2018 Collection, a new version of the famous colourblocked Caddy Bag which lends the same lines and proportions while embracing softer contours and expanded volumes. Featuring the distinctive magnetic fastening with a circle detail and a leather shoulder strap with double galvanic coated rings, the new Caddy Soft bag is perfect for those who prefer a less boxy, hard exterior when it comes to bags.
Longchamp’s new Amazone bags are messenger bags that feature nickel saddle buckles, a nod to the equestrian spirit treasured by Longchamp. They have a sliding metal chain which allows them to be worn in three ways — like a handbag, a shoulder bag or a cross-body. The Amazone line is available in a tonne of colourways and exciting fabrications; the bag comes in a python-print calfskin in shades of dusty pink, blush, coral pink and gray, smooth supple black or powder pink leather and black or burgundy lambskin with a wildly modern quilting design.
Louis Vuitton’s new bag pays an ode to the dawn of a “new wave” (and hence its name) of music in the ’80s. With its vibrant colourways and vivid multicoloured LV signature which are suggestive of joyful spirit of the Eighties, the New Wave not only heralds a determining point in music history but in fashion too.
The unique shape of the bag ties back to the maison’s roots as a trunk maker. In particular, a trunk from the late 1800s which was decorated with a graphic, multi-coloured motif that undulated like a wave. Inspired by this, the New Wave has a unique shape and quilted design to replicate the pattern of a wave. Well on its way to find its place amongst the house’s many timeless creations, this new receptacle is particularly fresh and invigorating given its bold choice of silhouette.
Dior’s kidney-shaped, oblong Saddle purse, with its many reiterations and celebrity stamps of approval, was the reigning It-bag of the early aughts. Having appeared on several episodes of Sex and the City worn tight against the armpit of (fictional) It-girl Carrie Bradshaw like some sort of boxy sleeve, the Saddle bag eventually fell out of production despite its popularity. We thought we’ve seen the last of it then, but as with all fashion trends that fall out of favour, it came around like a boomerang in full force and saw a resurrection during Dior’s recent Fall 2018 show.
Featured in a number of different styles including in the signature Dior logo print, beaded styles and patchwork prints, this season’s Saddle bags featured the iconic gold ‘D’ charm hanging off them. Vintage, with a twist — the new-and-improved Saddle bags are infinitely collectible and covetable.

For its Fall/Winter 2018 fashion show in Milan, Dolce & Gabbana made fashion history by employing the use of drones to ferry their new Devotion Bag across the runway in an act akin to it “descending from the fashion heavens”.
The Devotion Bag is sealed by an ornate bronze heart charm: a metal frieze made of micro-forged brass and copper inlaid with pearls and filigree. Featuring a quilted nappa leather design, the luxe must-have is currently available in five models and three colors — black, red and white. |

For the pre-fall season, Coach is reintroducing Bonnie Cashin’s Duffle from the ‘60s with a brand new attitude and a modern twist. Relaxed with an understated elegance, the new Coach Duffle looks chic and polished. In a special edition collaboration with Disney, the Coach Duffle takes on a playful energy with unexpected motifs such as spooky eyes and patches with designs from classic fairy tales like Snow White and Sleeping Beauty.
Coming out of the woods of Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2018 show, we emerged with a takeaway: the house has a brand new handbag, and it’s highly suggested that it’ll be a big push for the brand come fall. Huge volumes of the new 31 bag were sent down the runway in an array of colours and fabrications which included that of the luxe camo leaf motifs which were repeatedly used across the collection.
The shopper bag presents itself as a large foldover clutch-type which can be carried multiple ways — handheld, on the shoulder or as a clutch. By the looks of it, it seems rather versatile and we’re sure it’ll be a hit amongst the street style crowd this upcoming season.
