Fun fact: Did you know that A-list actress Fann Wong started her on-screen career when she was in primary school? Born from a Hakka descent, she was featured in several SBC (formerly Singapore Broadcasting Corporation, now Mediacorp) children’s programmes.
Her entertainment journey continued when at the age of 18, she made a cameo appearance in a Hong Kong film production, Thunder Cops II (1989), as Zhang Hua (张华).
But her career really started to shine in 1996, when she catapulted into fame for her roles Ye Qin, Li Xiangmei and Zhu Zhiyue in The Unbroken Cycle (1996).
Her outstanding performance even earned her a nomination at the Asian Television Awards. Subsequently, she starred as the lead actress, Lin Xiaoyun (林晓云), in the 40-episode blockbuster drama, Brave New World (1996), alongside her now-husband Christopher Lee and Hong Kong actor, Alex Man.
In 2002, Fann became the first Singaporean actress to play a major role in a Hollywood production. She snagged a role in Shanghai Knights (2003), where she starred as Jackie Chan’s sister Chon Lin, and had a chance to rub shoulders with big names like Owen Wilson and Donnie Yen.
Needless to say, this Ah Jie’s sense of style is just as remarkable as her list of accomplishments as an actress. Ever poised and elegant, she is never seen with a hair out of place. Want to look as put-together as her? Here’re some of her fashion tricks.
Sometimes, it’s okay to show some skin. But go for just a hint of it, to exude a sense of playful mystery. Fann displayed exactly that when she chose a feminine ruffled off-shoulder top which bared just the right amount of shoulder and neck. She kept the colour palette simple by pairing the top with a black mini skirt and black heels. You can style your dressy top up with a pair of smart shorts, or go casual by wearing it with denim jeans on the weekends.
Instead of going for barely there pieces, try sleek and sophisticated numbers that leave a little more to the imagination. Just look at Fann’s ensemble. She stopped by Chaumet in a classy V-neck long-sleeve black dress that revealed a hint of her collarbone.
Together with a bright red lippie and statement earrings, her look is right on point. It goes to show you can turn heads without showing skin.
A white shirt will always be work appropriate. However, to give it a more interesting twist, give your ivory blouses an update by investing in pieces that have details or textures, such as this Carolina Herrera piece that Fann wore.
It sports eye-catching ruffled sleeves which add a dash of femininity to the usually severe white shirt. Fann paired hers with emerald green bottoms, but you can rock yours with a black maxi skirt to give your look a dose of gravitas.
Va va voom! Fann flaunted her gorgeous gams in this breezy white maxi sundress while at a Bulgari event. Although the dress leans on the side of casual, she amped it up with a pair of silver platform heels, which elevated both her stature and her ensemble.
Learn from her and invest in a maxi sundress, which we think is a closet essential. Wear it to work with a blazer and court shoes to make it more work appropriate. Shed the jacket and slip into some heels if you want to head for drinks after.
Apart from colour blocking and matching different prints, you can also mix various materials to elevate your look. Here, Fann wore a sheer ribbed pullover that showcased her inner black bralet, and juxtaposed the soft material with a sturdy, suede knee-length skirt.
She finished her look with a pair of crimson leather pumps that added a striking contrast to her ensemble. Very sassy, yet work appropriate. We adore.
Don’t play it safe all the time: Inject some fun into your wardrobe choices and don’t be afraid to be experimental like Fann, who went with bright colours and floral prints in this #OOTD.
She contrasted a forest green t-shirt with a tricolour floral printed maxi skirt, and continued her adventurous streak with thick beaded necklaces and chunky studded wedge sandals. She’s definitely not afraid to make a statement.
Since you do not have to look sharp and presentable on the weekends, cut yourself some slack by dressing comfortably on your off days. Wear a snug oversized sweater and a pair of sweat pants on lazy Sundays, like what Fann did.
She gave her look an athleisure twist by slipping into some white sneakers, and added a pair of shades for good measure. An effortless street look you can easily emulate.
Donning your silky lounge-wear out can be risky, but not if you know how to style it. Be like Fann who was a picture of cool chic in a navy blue satin two-piece pajamas with metallic stripes when she was at Bolon Eyewear’s store opening at Wisma Atria.
For that added touch of pizzazz, she sealed her look with a pair of bright coloured sunglasses and a statement choker. The important thing to note when it comes to nailing this look, is to make sure your accessories are a stand-out. Then flaunt your look with confidence.
If you’re rocking something simple such as a white t-shirt and a pair of denim shorts, always complete your ensemble with a statement accessory. Fann chose to match her white peplum sleeveless blouse and shorts ensemble to these yellow espadrille wedges that feature emerald green satin lace details. Don’t own a pair of fancy heels? You can finish your look with bold jewellery or a statement eyewear.
Casual yet chic, a minimalist ensemble should be your go-to outfit on a daily basis since it exudes a graceful sophistication. Fann interpreted hers with a full-white look that features a turtleneck sweater and a pair of wide legged cropped jeans. Not a fan of the alabaster shade because you’re a klutz (hello wine spills and ketchup stains)? Rock a black t-shirt and a pair of dark coloured tailored pants instead.
