The warm, lazy days of summer were met with a retro approach to dressing up by our favourite style stars. This week, celebs like local actress Denise Camillia and Hong Kong actress-model Sharon Chan embraced vintage trends like ruffles and cropped tops. So how do you work these trends from your youth that are making their way back onto the fashion racks?
One rule of thumb is to pair your vintage clothing with modern accessories. Too much vintage, and you’ll risk looking like you’re wearing a costume. Scroll through the gallery to see all of the best looks for the week.
Windbreakers are inherently a little ‘90s, and can be styled in a way that either leans into that vibe, or to add an element of intrigue.
The latest to take a fancy to the all-weather lightweight jacket is Chinese actress Ma Si Chun. The “Soul Mate” actress put a cool spin on the all-purpose outerwear by pairing it with a graphic tee and denim cutoff shorts. She went glam with her accessories, like round sunglasses and a heart shaped Saint Laurent crossbody.
The tracksuit was a silhoutte that defined the early 2000s – and Juicy Couture, was the the brand of choice for the celebs who proudly sported the trend (and the words “Juicy”), emblazoned across their posterior. Given the rise of the athleisure trend, it comes as no surprise to see the comfort and ease of the tracksuit back in style.
The silouhette has gotten a sophisticated, grown-up update and tastemakers are reimagining new ways to sport the style that goes beyond the typical two-piece set. Take a note from one-quarter of local indie band The Sam Willows, Narelle Kheng, who styled her comfy joggers with a logo tee, choker, and trendy sneakers for a casual look that’s perfect for the weekend.

The trick to pulling off the frilly look (without looking like a little girl) is to make the ruffles the focal point of your outfit, and make sure it’s dramatic and structured.
Local actress Denise Camillia is bringing sexy back with her backless airy number from H&M. If you’re not a particularly feminine dresser, don’t let that put you off. Follow Denise’s lead and team your frou-frou frills with a pair of combat boots to add a little more edge to your outfit.

Low-heeled espadrilles like Hong Kong actress Myolie Wu’s are great for adding a little height to a ladylike look.
These espadrilles are also the perfect partner to a summery little white dress.

One ‘90s trend in particular – the off-the-shoulder crop top, or “bubble” top – is now on the verge of a major renaissance.
With extra bands of elastic around the waist and arms and usually cropped at the waist, the trend pairs perfectly with high-rise bottoms. TVB actress Sharon Chan wore her off-the-shoulder top with a pair of high-waisted pleated pants.

A jumpsuit is without a doubt a statement-making piece. The head-to-toe, all-in-one garment creates a striking look that moves beyond a simple dress or pant and top combo.
That said, it isn’t always the easiest piece of clothing to pull off. That is why it is important to choose the right fit that flatters your body type. If you are on the petite side like Hong Kong singer G.E.M, opt for a tailored slim, ankle-grazing style to avoid looking swamped in the fabric.
If you want to fill your wardrobe up with versatile staples, look no further than a midi dress seen on Girls’ Generation member Sooyoung.
Whether you choose to wear it while walking the dog, heading out to a beach, or even dressing it up with a pair of sky-high stiletto heels, a midi dress is a great addition to your closet.
Once upon a time, pantsuits were black, shoulder-padded, and reserved for the office. These days, brught monochromatic looks are having a major fashion moment, and head-to-toe black has been usurped by more colourful palettes. Get a pantsuit in pink like “The Meg” star Li Bingbing if you don’t want to look too formal or fussy.

While denim and a slogan tee is a classic pairing, style yourself up a bit by tucking in your top and swapping your casual flats for some heeled booties like Girls’ Generation member Hyoyeon.
Mix two big trends together for an Instagram worthy outfit: ruffled crop top and striped pants. Radio jock Kimberly Wang is wearing a cropped top from Klarra, Topshop trousers and white Adidas trainers.
