Designer Herve Leger, who passed away at the age of 60 last Friday (Oct 6), was most famous for his role in designing one of the most enduring iconic dresses of the 90s’ which have prevailed till today as the prime red carpet attire of choice for celebrities and A-listers alike – the bandage dress.
The fashion genius used strips of luxury material sew together to design his figure-accentuating dress – it’s no wonder, then, how the dress grew to become a hit amongst ordinary women with its bulge-concealing sorcery. At the 65th Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles (LA) in 1993, Cindy Crawford was spotted in a Herve Leger floor-length white dress which hugged her curves in all the right places. Movie beauty Salma Hayek then floored the crowd with a sweet, but oh-so-provocative lilac mini dress in 1998 while Liz Hurley gets an upgraded va-va-voluptuous lift in a white hug shoulder Herve Leger number at the ‘Nine Months’ LA Premiere back in 1995.

At the 67th Oscar Academy Awards in 1995, Rita Wilson wore a black square neckline Herve Leger dress which featured intricate beading at the decollete. The moment was marked as an iconic one for the actress who was then with her husband Tom Hanks as he won ‘best actor’ for his role in ‘Forrest Gump’. Looking back fondly, Rita paid an ode to the late designer on Instagram last Saturday (Oct 7) saying, “I loved this dress. It was so comfortable. I felt like myself. I didn’t get to keep it. It was loaned. But, years later, I asked if the dress could be donated to an auction for HIV/AIDS and he willingly and generously gave it without hesitation. May he Rest In Peace.”

In a #TBT post on her website, Kim Kardashian West claimed that she was “so obsessed” with Herve Leger’s colourful bandage-style dresses that it became her “uniform”. In fact, she wore them so often to red carpet events and even on a daily basis that the burgundy dress she wore in the opening credits sequence of the first season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians was a original Herve Leger. Talk about obsessed.
