First on this list is a great “quick fix” option that lasts about a day. I tried this mist last year and was pleasantly surprised to find that it didn’t leave my hair feeling stiff or tangled. The name makes it sound almost life-changing, though I wouldn’t give it that much credit. However, it did do a very nice job of giving my hair a significant amount of volume, which truly lasted the entire day. I noticed a difference when I didn’t use it the next day, even going as far as feeling a little disappointed with my regular hair. It works best when you use it on nearly-dry hair, and finish blow drying the rest of it.

What stands out for me is the clear consistency and refreshing scent. It left my scalp a lot cleaner than expected for a nourishing shampoo. My hair felt thicker at the end of the process, and also a lot more manageable. The science behind it is something called Oxyfusion technology, which essentially uses oxygen-fused ingredients in the formula (that are supposedly absorbed better by our hair) to coat each strand of hair in a protective layer. These molecules are meant to swell in water and push individual strands apart to make them more manageable and voluminous. Overall, this is a great buy for those of us with dry and limp hair, and I’ve found that the boost in volume is noticeable yet completely natural and can be amplified with the root lift spray.

If you’ve got fine hair, this shampoo is infused with a complex that will moisturise your hair as well as build up the volume. The best part? It’s colour safe which means if you have dyed hair it won’t strip your hair like some volumising shampoos might do. It’s gentle enough for everyday use, leaves your hair feeling smooth instead of frizzy, and is especially handy if you have an oily scalp, but I recommend always using a conditioner if you have mid-length or longer hair to keep your ends from drying out. Oh and despite the high price tag, a little goes a long way.

L’Oreal Paris’ Hair Expertise range was the jumping off point from which I began my foray into more specialised shampoos and conditioners. I started with the EverSleek set, then the EverPure Colour care range, then Oleotherapy. The newer EverPure Volume range is made specially for fine, limp hair, with rosemary and juniper as natural active ingredients to provide antioxidants, sebum control and nourishment for the scalp to encourage healthier and more voluminous hair. Perfect for anyone looking for an affordable sulfate-free option that also protects coloured hair.

Earlier last year, Goldwell unveiled its new range of Kerasilk salon treatments to target various hair concerns. I got my hair diagnosed and was given a Kerasilk Reconstruct treatment to repair the intensive damage from a prior hair colouring job. The treatment and the take-home products truly transformed my hair, and my hair is still incredibly healthy many months later. If you’ve got thin or flat hair, you can try the Repower treatment for volume instead, which can give your hair a much-desired volume boost, and follow up with the take-home shampoo ($40), foam conditioner ($44), and blow-dry spray ($44) to really prolong the effects of the treatment.

This product is similar to the first in the sense that it’s a styling product. It just requires a little more work being a cream formula. Less is more with this, so apply a little on damp hair and blow-dry! It smells amazing, and doesn’t feel stick, which is a plus. It’s just worth noting that this product is recommended for short to medium length hair, so if you have longer hair and it isn’t working too well, you can’t really fault the product. Besides, the longer your hair is, the heavier it’s going to get, so the effects of gravity on your hair are naturally going to be more severe.
