I reviewed this $398 LED device and my pimple went down overnight

If you’re looking to treat multiple skin concerns at one once, the Happy Birthday Time Machine might just be the device for you. Here’s how it works

I’m constantly on the hunt for a facial device that will impart that coveted K-pop idol glow and solve all my skin concerns. When I heard about local skincare brand Happy Birthday’s Time Machine facial device – which promises to tackle the trifecta of calming, brightening and improving the overall appearance of fine lines and wrinkles – I was naturally intrigued.

The device uses gentle light-emitting-diode (or LED) pulsed light therapy. Originally used by NASA in their plant growth experiments, the technology emits different wavelengths to penetrate the skin to tackle various skin concerns.

My experience with Happy Birthday’s Time Machine

The Happy Birthday Time Machine is pretty straightforward. It has three light settings that work to target different skin issues: red for improving skin elasticity and healing. The blue light reduces excess sebum production to prevent breakouts. The yellow light evens out the skin tone, brightens dull complexion and reduces the appearance of dark spots.

Before using the device, I thoroughly cleansed my skin before following up with the brand’s own Time Essence that comes with the Time Essence + Time Machine Kit ($398). Formulated with skin-loving ingredients like apple stem cells and sodium hyaluronate, Time Essence is designed to work with the device to repair and nourish skin.

Once powered on (press and hold the start button), the LED lights come to life. Perfect for those who like myself, don’t need all the bells and whistles, all you have to do is apply gentle pressure while gliding the device in upward motions. You’ll experience a light buzzing and pulsating sensation but nothing unbearable. It’s also activated by touch so the vibration stops the moment the device leaves your face. If you have a pesky single pimple, I would suggest placing the device directly on the zit for about a minute as a spot treatment.

VIsible difference overnight

There’s a visible difference immediately after. My skin looked more radiant and I saw more definition along my jawline. I also had a pretty nasty zit on my left cheek on day 1 that went down overnight.

For best results, Happy Birthday recommends using the Time Machine five to ten minutes each time. The brand also says to use it once a day for a more intensive treatment and twice a week for maintenance.

TL;DR Should I get it?

This wireless, handheld device takes about five minutes to work its magic which makes it a great choice for those strapped for time. Its inwardly-curved edge grasps the contours of the face (cheekbones and jawbones) perfectly.

The slight pulsating sensation takes some time getting used to but for the most part, it was a comfortable experience. It’s also quite idiot-proof. Just press and hold to switch on the device and press once to change the light setting. You don’t need to connect it to an app. And it charges up with a USB cable that comes with purchase of the device.

After just one use, my skin had a lit-from-within appearance. My skin looked healthier overall as well. The angry bump on my cheek went down overnight after use. With consistent use (twice a week for about a month), my smile lines looked less prominent. I could also see more definition along my cheekbones and jawline too. The device definitely errs on the pricier side but it does deliver on its claims.

Get it here.
