Review: Does the Philips Fresh Air Mask help you breathe better?

The next-gen face mask you need to know about

With the ongoing pandemic, it’s safe to say that we’re all used to wearing our face masks on the regular. However, for some of us, we still feel uncomfortable wearing them for long as it can still disrupt breathing patterns, leaving you feeling dizzy or winded. And so if you’re one who faces difficulty breathing with your mask on, and you find yourself taking off your mask every now and then for a breath of fresh air, then this Philips Fresh Air Mask might solve all your woes.

While wearing a disposable face mask might do the job, at times, it just doesn’t cut it, especially if you’re wearing it for long hours. And that’s where the Philips Fresh Air Mask comes in. Designed with three units – a customised Air Power module (with chargeable battery) an outer layer and an air filter, the mask works to provide fresh airflow for better breathing comfort while removing trapped heat and moisture. Now, while it may sound really convincing, the mask does come with a rather expensive price tag – it retails for $159. So you might be wondering: Does it work and is it really worth the price tag? Here, I put the new Philips mask to the test.

Review: Does the Philips Fresh Air Mask help you breathe better?
Pros: Fresh airflow
image

Like many, I find it difficult to breathe with my mask on at times, especially when I’m engaging in strenuous exercises at the gym. So I was really thrilled to put the Philips mask to the test during my workout sessions to see if it lived up to its promise of making breathing easier.

Over the course of the entire week of trying the mask (in and out of the gym), I noticed that it provided a comfortable experience. I didn’t find myself gasping for air, or taking my mask off to take in a breath of fresh air because I could breathe easier with the mask on. It honestly felt like I wasn’t wearing any mask on with the exception that I could still feel something strapped onto my face of course.

I also really liked how the Philips mask comes built with a fan module on the left side of the mask, so I could control and adjust the fan speed accordingly. It comes in really handy especially if you’re wearing glasses too, as it works to remove trapped heat and moisture. (No more foggy glasses!)

Pros: Reusable

If there’s something else I love about the mask, it would be the fact that it’s reusable and washable. Unlike disposable masks, this reusable mask is made of a water-resistant fabric shell that can be washed each time you use it. The air filter, on the other hand, can be replaced every 15 days or after 40 hours of usage, so you don’t exactly have to worry about spending so much to change the filter every day.

It’s also important to note that this air filter forms an integral part of the mask itself as it cleans the air and acts as a layer of safety protection between the part of the face covered by the mask and the fan module and its electric components.

Philips
Pros: Comfortable fit

Knowing that the mask comes with an in-built fan module, some might have the impression that the mask isn’t as comfortable as you might think it would be. Well, in my opinion, in terms of its wearability factor, it does feel soft and snug when worn.

However, from my experience, I noticed that the mask does feel a little heavy and bulky at first, but it may take some time to get used to and of course, take into consideration that it’s designed with other electric components too.

Her World
Pros: Protects skin from UV light
image

While most masks focus on covering your face and protecting your lungs, this mask does just that and more. Thanks to its unique fabric shell material, the mask also doubles as a “sunblock” for your face as it protects your skin from the effects of UV light with UPF50+.

Her World
Cons: Pricey
image

Retailing at $159, the face mask can be a little pricey to some. Aside from the mask itself, you’ll also have to purchase the air filters separately which comes in a box of 5 for $39. However, the good thing about these air filters is that you don’t have to change them every day.

For its price and utility, I would say that the Philips Fresh Air Mask is not a tech-based alternative to your usual mask but it’s a niche product that only a select few would find very useful to own, say a fitness enthusiast, runner, or even someone who experiences a lot of difficulties breathing with a mask on. It’s safe to say that the mask really did deliver what it promised and it’s truly something unique to own if you’re willing to invest in one.

The Philips Fresh Air Mask ($159) is now available at Best Denki and Amazon Singapore, and online on www.philips.com.sg. The Fresh Air Mask Filter ($39) and Fresh Air Mask Filter ($39) are also available for purchase in a box of 5 pieces. For more information, visit www.philips.com.sg.
