I’ve been colouring my hair for as long as I can remember. So dealing with dry and damaged hair is something I’ve long come to accept. But my undoing really came after I bleached my hair some years ago. My hair texture hasn’t been the same since. It’s no longer smooth and sleek.
Well, the bleaching might have stopped but I still colour my hair every two months to hide my greys. And because my hair is so damaged, I’ve taken to swopping out my conditioner for a hair mask as part of my daily haircare routine. However, I don’t leave it on for long because I don’t want to stand around in the bathroom in the cold while waiting for the mask to take effect.
So when the new Jung Beauty 2 Step Steam Hair Spa arrived, I was really excited to try it out, especially since I had just coloured my hair a week ago. Here’s what went down:
What It Is
Key Ingredients
A formula of hydrolysed keratin, gold, silk amino acids and coconut oil to strengthen hair while repairing damage, reducing frizz and leaving hair soft and shiny.
The Texture
The mask looks and feels like most hair masks in the market – creamy and a little thick in texture. There is also a rather strong floral scent.
The Keratin Leave-In Treatment, on the other hand, looks like a thick lotion, but feels really lightweight to the touch.
I found the instructions very easy to follow. After shampooing my hair, I towel dry, gently squeezing out the excess water so it’s not dripping wet. Then I carefully stuff my slightly damp hair into the pack, making sure to massage the Steaming Hair Mask Treatment in well, so that it covers as much of my hair as possible.
The hair mask comes with a long sticker-like tab to hold the cap in place so it doesn’t slide off your head. I use it to tighten it over my head for a better fit.
I love how everything is contained so I don’t have to worry about product dripping down my back and neck. I even manage to give myself a little extra pampering with a sheet mask for my face, while letting the Steaming Hair Mask Treatment do its thing.
Within three to four minutes, I can feel my head getting warmer. I’m reminded of those in-salon hair treatments where my head is placed under a giant shower cap with a hose attached to it, to pump hot air and steam through.
The mask gets quite hot, but not painfully so. According to the product details, the steam effect comes from botanical extracts used to induce heat. This is done to help the nutrients in the Steaming Hair Mask Treatment absorb better into your hair.
However, because I have short-ish hair, my hair keeps “escaping” from the cap at my nape.
After 15 minutes, I rinse the mask off. I can feel that my hair is instantly softer and smoother. However, the coconut oil in the mask made my bathroom floor a little slippery.
And although the mask has a rather strong floral scent, it’s hardly noticeable after I step out of the shower.
After towel drying my hair for the second time, I apply the second step, the Keratin Leave-In Treatment. I’m surprised at the generous amount in the sachet. In fact, I only used a third of it and end up using the leftovers over the next 2 hair washes.
I make sure not to apply the Leave-In Treatment too close to my scalp, concentrating on the length and ends. It glides on easily and I can feel its smoothening effect right away. I really like that it’s lightweight so it absorbs really fast and doesn’t leave a silicone-y or greasy finish.
To finish, I blow-dry my hair. I can see that my hair looks and feels much softer and smoother. It looks more sleek, and there’s less frizz and flyaways, yet isn’t weighed down so there’s still some bounce to it. There’s a shampoo commercial hair swish quality to it too.
Over the week, I tried the Jung Beauty 2 Step Steam Hair Spa one more time. And on my second try, I decide to use a headband to hold the cap in place. This helped to keep my hair inside the cap and minimised any chance of it slipping off.
While I still use my regular hair mask as a conditioner, the Jung Beauty 2 Step Steam Hair Spa is an extra pampering treat for my dry and damaged hair, where I give the Steaming Hair Mask Treatment its full 15 minutes to work its magic. As the hair mask is quite rich, I’d recommend using it once a week, especially if your hair is generally problem-free.
Jung Beauty 2 Step Steam Hair Spa retails for $50 for a box of five and is available from www.ksisters.sg.
