HW Beauty Review: Is the new Dyson Corrale Straightener worth paying $699 for?

The cord-free heat tool also lets you curl your hair easily without damaging it

My hair has been through a lot. I’ve permed it, cut it, hot tooled it and am still bleaching my roots every three months. Also prone to the betrayal of hair styling tools over the years, my hair and I haven’t always been on great terms.

After spending some time with the new Dyson Corrale straightener ($699) — it just launched in Singapore — it gave me an easy, polished hairstyle that didn’t take long to produce, but it came with its challenges.

The promise:

A cord-free hair straightener that protects hair strands from excessive heat damage while maintaining its beauty and shine. It is the only hair straightener with flexing plate technology that gathers hairs and distributes the heat evenly throughout. It can be used to straighten and curl hair.

My first impressions:

It’s a very expensive hair straightener. There’s no avoiding that $699 price tag. At 0.56kg, it’s heavier than my other straighteners which poses a potential issue if I’m travelling.

It was fully charged in about an hour and lasted around 20 minutes when cord-free. It proved to be a challenge as it took more than a few tries to get a stable motion. I’m used to attempting a super straight hair look in under 10 minutes. My first attempt at the Dyson Corrale took me more than half an hour.

What is so special about the flexing plates?
image

Unlike traditional hair straighteners, the flexing plates sort of encase the gathered hair and prevents flyaways at the side. This also allows the user to have greater control of the styler. With better control comes less repeated use over the same area and fewer chances of increasing the heat temperature.

My fourth attempt was smooth sailing and I could achieve the look I desired closer to my usual 10 minute time frame. I’ve never had much issue with loose strands that escape at the side but I have had the tendency to use strong tension while holding the hair in between the straightener. With the Dyson Corrale, I didn’t encounter that issue.

It doesn’t overheat

Once the unit is turned on, you can choose three temperature settings: 165°C, 185°C and 210°C. As I have bleached blonde hair, I stuck with 165°C to prevent further heat damage and hair breakage.

As my average time spent with the hair straightener was around 20 minutes, I realised that the plates were not extremely hot to the touch. With my old devices, the flash memory of sudden burns to my neck left me very impressed with the Dyson Corrale.

With Intelligent Heat Control, it has a sensor that measures the temperature at 100 times a second; controlling the heating system to deliver accurate heat levels throughout.

It can be used to curl hair

Like many conventional hair straighteners, you can use it to curl your hair as well. Loose curls were achievable but the limited time of going cord-less might not be ideal for long, thick hair.

Other notable features

It has a flight mode feature that makes it safe to be packed in your luggage for overseas travelling. With a magnetic 360° charging cable, it was easier to manoeuvre around when sectioning off different parts of my hair.

The Dyson Corrale straightener is now available in two colourways – Iron/Fuchsia and Purple/Black.

The Iron/Fuchsia is available on dyson.com.sg, at the Dyson Demo Store – Owner Centre at Capitol Piazza and Dyson Demo Store – Beauty Lab at Funan Mall, and major electrical department stores. The Purple/Black is exclusively available on direct Dyson channels – dyson.com.sg, at the Dyson Demo Store
