HW Beauty Review: Does your skincare need its own beauty fridge?

And is it really worth it? Find out here

If like me, constantly scrolling through Instagram, you’d probably would have noticed that the ubiquitous #shelfies have been replaced with #beautyfridge photos by skincare devotees. Besides looking too darn adorable, there are some reasons why you should consider getting one.

#1: Social distancing

Sure, you can always store your skincare in your regular fridge, but that’s usually packed with food, with precious little space left for your beauty products. Plus, a dedicated beauty fridge also minimises the risk of contamination between your skincare and food.

#2: Cooler is better

Let’s face it, everyone loves having something cold, especially when the weather is scorching hot (or hotter). Using a cool mask or applying a cold beauty cream makes for an extremely welcoming treat at the end of a long day.

#3: Extended shelf life

We’re constantly advised to keep our products away from direct sunlight and heat, because that can cause certain ingredients to break down and oxidise. So storing them in a beauty fridge where temperatures are cool can help prevent formulas from splitting or becoming less effective.

But it’s important to note that not all products can be kept in your beauty fridge.  Avoid storing oil-based products and waxy balms in it as the cold temperature can solidify the formula, which may affect its effectiveness.

Water-based products are best, like facial mists, gels and essences. Here’s what we’ve stashed in ours:

Toner, facial essence, facial mist, serum, eye cream, overnight mask, sheet mask, and facial tools like jade rollers. Beauty drinks and supplements, like jellies and gummies.

HW Beauty Review: Does your skincare need its own beauty fridge?
Skin Inc. My Beauty Treasure Chest, $158
image

Size:

External: 33.7cm by 24.3cm by 31cm
Internal: 14cm by 14cm by 24cm
Capacity: 8 litres

Features: Comes with both cold and warm functions, a removable inner shelf and a small panel at the side. The shelf separates the interior into two equal compartments. It also comes with a small handle on top for easy transportation.

Comfortably fits: With the inner shelf removed, it can hold a full skincare routine, minus facial wash and sunscreen, including multiple serums. We managed to fit in:

  • 1 bottle of essence (250ml)
  • 1 facial mist (100ml)
  • 1 toner (100ml)
  • 3 serums (in various sizes, 30ml – 50ml)
  • 2 moisturisers (50ml)
  • 1 overnight mask (60ml)
  • 1 eye cream (15ml)
  • 3 sheet masks
  • 1 facial tool (jade or rose quartz roller)
  • Total: 14 items

Chill factor:
Takes 35-40 minutes to get cold.

Overall: The most roomy of the three fridges in this lineup, with the easiest access to your products. The roomy interior fits everything comfortably, which has room for more. Most importantly, it makes reaching in to retrieve any product easy too.

Every purchase of the Skin Inc My Beauty Treasure Chest comes with a complimentary box of Beauty Jelly Dose.

Ksisters Glow Up Fridge, $150

Size:

External: 20.8cm by 27.5cm by 30.3cm
Internal: 14cm by 14.8cm by 24cm
Capacity: 6 litres

Features: Comes with both hot and cold functions, and a removable inner shelf that divides the interior into two equal compartments. It also has a small panel at the side that can be used to store sheet masks. There is a large handle on the top, which makes it easy to transport around.

Comfortably fits: With the inner shelf removed, it can hold a full skincare routine, minus a facial wash and sunscreen. We managed to fit in:

  • 1 bottle of essence (250ml)
  • 1 facial mist (100ml)
  • 1 toner (100ml)
  • 2 serums (in various sizes, 30ml – 50ml)
  • 2 moisturisers (50ml)
  • 1 overnight mask (60ml)
  • 1 eye cream (15ml)
  • 3 sheet masks
  • 1 facial tool (jade or rose quartz roller)
  • Total: 13 items

Chill factor:
Takes 20-25 minutes to get cold.

Overall: The easiest to move around and a latch system to keep the fridge door securely closed. But because the fridge is so compact, we found the side panel to store sheet masks a little too narrow, so not all your favourite ones will fit. The interior also feels a little cramp and we needed to move around products to reach what we wanted.

The Glow Up Fridge comes with a limited edition curation of seven of its best-selling sheet masks.

Stylux Mini Fridge, $99
image

Size:

External: 26cm by 18cm by 25cm
Internal: 21cm by 15cm by 14cm
Capacity: 4 litres

Features: Comes with both hot and cold functions, and a removable inner shelf that divides the interior into a 1:3 ratio.

Comfortably fits: With the inner shelf removed, it can store skincare essentials like:

  • 1 bottle of essence (250ml)
  • 1 toner (100ml)
  • 2 serums (in various sizes, 30ml – 50ml)
  • 2 moisturisers (50ml)
  • 1 overnight mask (60ml)
  • 1 eye cream (15ml)
  • 2 sheet masks
  • 1 facial tool (jade or rose quartz roller)
  • Total: 10 items

Chill factor:
Takes 20 minutes to get cold.

Overall: Compact and fits into small spaces well. But do note that despite the 1:3 ratio storage space with the inner shelf, taller bottles didn’t fit. For anything more than a 100ml bottle, you’ll need to remove the inner shelf to make more space. And the missing side panel behind the door meant that we had to stash our sheet masks in the main compartment.

Comes in red, white and black.
