Makeup is about expressing yourself and having fun – and that’s what three makeup artists did when we gave them free rein. Scroll through to see the cool makeup looks to try as imagine by Kenneth Chia, Priscelia Wong and Kat Zhang.
“Nightlife inspires a lot of my work – this glitzy eye is a nod to the colourful characters on the dance floors. With the lower half of our faces covered, we can afford to have a little more fun with our eyes. You can start by playing with coloured eyeliner or soft washes of eyeshadow. Keep skin fresh with a lightweight foundation so you don’t look overdone.”

“In these mask-wearing times, having a bold lip is like wearing nice underwear – it’s for our own enjoyment. I pressed a fuchsia blusher onto fuchsia lipstick to create a soft, fluffy finish. You can achieve the same lightweight, velvety pout using a non-matte lipstick: Apply lipstick, then gently place a single-ply tissue over lips and dust some translucent powder on top using a fluffy brush. If you’re adventurous, you can even smear some lipstick on the temple for a geisha-like touch.”

“I wanted to create the sparkly special effect you get from the Kirakira photo-enhancing app. I also want to show that unbalanced makeup can be beautiful – our eyes aren’t symmetrical anyway. You can get crystals from craft shops or nail art kits, and stick them on with eyelash glue – they’re skin-safe, and won’t come loose. To keep the look neat, define eyes with liquid eyeliner, and groom your brows.”

“This look combines two trends: glowing skin and holographic finishes, which I love. I’ve injected a holographic element to skin, so it’s radiant in an almost otherworldly way. To make this look wearable, apply a dual-chromatic face powder, or highlighter with pigments that show up as two or more colours, on the high points of the face. If you’re feeling daring, apply on your eyes too.”

“I wanted to translate the idea of molten bronze to lips, the way its movement creates an interesting contrast in texture. It’s an effect that’s both sensual and luxurious. Use a warm-toned brown lipstick with a metallic finish as the base. Next, layer on a gold shimmery gloss; for a matte finish, use gold eyeshadow. For a stronger plumping effect, apply more gold to the centre of your lips.”

“This look, inspired by the evening sunset along the coast, is both pretty and edgy. To create it, swipe a warm or coral eyeshadow over your eyelids, as well as under the lower lash line. Use liquid eyeliner to do a simple winged line, then draw a parallel line just above the natural eyelid crease. Connect the lines at the outer corner to mimic the curve of the setting sun.”
