Dry, cracked and chapped lips are a continuous problem, even in a climate as humid as ours. They are a fairly common occurrence for a number of reasons: We don’t drink enough water, spend too much time in an airconditioned room – and this on top of subjecting our lips to the usual amount of wear and tear through talking, drinking, eating, kissing or breathing.
These lip treatments work their best magic at night while you sleep, and while the price tags on a couple of these are a tad outrageous, they’re a lot more than just regular lip balms.

And old colleague and beauty editor once recommended this to me when I was asking for a solution to my dry lip problem. She said it was an amazing overnight treatment, and could even be used as a quick intensive prep half an hour before applying a matte liquid lipstick.
It comes in a little jar with a spatula, and while the thick texture makes it difficult to do much else the rest of the night, it is quite comfortable and non-sticky. Slap it on right before you go to sleep and you’ll wake up with intensely nourished smackers. It’s also really affordable for the amount of product you get, which makes it the best option if you’re on a budget.

This cult favourite has long been loved by beauty buffs, models and makeup artists alike across the world. By Terry has released various tinted versions of this lip balm called Baume De Rose Nutri-Couleur (US$48 for 7g each, from net-a-porter.com), which are perfect for anyone who wants their lip balm with a jolt of colour. It’s a rather rich salve, but it melts into your lips upon application. One very small drawback for me personally is the almost vintage rose scent (that smells like my grandmother’s perfumes). That said, it doesn’t linger and becomes a non-issue after a minute or two.
The addition of an ingredient called pastel oil is what promises to boost cell renewal and helps repair your lips. The balm itself has rose flower essential wax and shea butter for soothing and plumping (it really does make my lips look plumper and filled in), as well as vitamin E and UV filters (yay, SPF protection).

I’ve been using this for a week now, and my lips are the smoothest and softest they have been in months. It looks like a regular lipstick and comes in various shades, but also works as an intensively conditioning lip balm that smooths out the appearance of lip lines. While I like it mainly for how healthy they make my lips appear, I have tried the shade that looks colourless in the tube but deposits a slight hint of pink, and the colour really does last ages – even through meals.
The combination of anti-ageing antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E, as well as the hydrating component with plum oil, cherry oil, shea butter, aloe and jojoba turns this into quite the hybrid lip product that’s convenient enough to carry around in your handbag.

Impressive price tag aside, this lip serum has been raved about by a fair few friends and beauty colleagues for its sheer nourishing and reparative power when it comes to dry, chapped lips. The serum comes packed with nourishing and anti-ageing ingredients like rosehip oil and rice germ, all of which promise to firm and plump up your lips.
The recommended way to use this is not just applying it directly from the tube, but also utilising the metal applicator to massage the product into your lips. The massage, alongside the rather minty tingling sensation the serum gives your lips, seems to boost the blood circulation in your lips and define the contours of your lips over time. Bonus: It gives your lips a wonderfully glossy shine.
