Makeup artist Clarence Lee’s tips on wearing lucky Chinese New Year colours the right way

The celebrated celebrity face painter shows us how to look polished and ‘prosperous’ for the new year, with a little makeup magic from Cle de Peau Beaute’s Spring 2016 collection!

Makeup artist Clarence Lee’s tips on wearing lucky Chinese New Year colours the right way T

Happy Lunar New Year, lovely ladies! In the auspicious spirit of angbao-giving, we challenged maquillage master Clarence Lee to conjure up a look that’s both lucky and luxe, and he was only too happy to oblige.

The fresh face you see here on our model of the moment Lily K is a complete cinch to pull off – and a testament to the versatility of the vivid colours courtesy of Cle de Peau Beaute. The chartreuse, champagnes and cantaloupes meld together so very harmoniously – sort of like the brightly hued bits and bobs that make up a platter of prosperous yusheng, come to think of it.

Let’s break it down, shall we. Skipping straight to the star of the show – the lips! Do as Clarence does and smudge out a satiny lippie in an opulent orange, using clean fingers to start from the centre of your pout before fanning out towards the edges. Because hey, this marvelous makeup hue is fabulous for feng shui – and what better way to incorporate orange into your look than a sexy slick of tantalising tangerine on your lips? Worn judiciously like so, orange lips lend an instantly brightening effect to your face.

Proceeding to the peepers. Treat your entire lid to a lovely lemony wash of yellow, then rim your upper lash with a gorgeous metallic green, smudging it ever so gently for a calculated dose of sexy nonchalance. Next, use the pointy end of a soft brush to apply a cool champagne accent on the inner corners and lower lash-line; this will catch the light for a multidimensional glimmer. Finish by “tightlining” the sparse spots between your lashes with a creamy brown pencil. No Adele-esque winged tip, please; restraint is required here, so stop lining at the farthest end of your natural lash line. The result? A richly opulent eye that retains just enough airy sandiness to pull off for day.

The same “soft” approach applies for the skin, which is delightfully dewy and beguilingly bare-looking – the goal is to look like you’ve just swam a few laps at dusk in the infinity pool of your penthouse suite. The final flourish? A delicious dusting of an apricot highlighting powder along the top of the cheekbones for a subtly shimmery effect; sort of like an “abridged” Asian twist on the contoured cheeks favoured by the Kardashian Klan, if you will.

Show me some skin

First things first: Get your fundamentals right by investing in this incredibly indulgent skincare line. Cle de Peau Beaute’s not-so-basic Basic Skincare suite of lotions, emulsions and creams – now revamped and more ridiculously rad than ever.

Starring a skin-softening silk extract culled from a specially bred species of silkworm, Clarence (and yours truly, for that matter) would like to single out the hydrating Hydro-clarifying Lotion for its singular ability to prep your face for products to follow. Here’s a personal tip: I’m fond of decanting this comforting and conditioning lotion into a facial spray bottle for use as a makeup-setting and mattifying mist.

Top up with the Protective Fortifying Emulsion, incidentally also my fave product from the range. The superbly silky salve suffuses my skin with a subtle sheen that’s very fetching indeed; if you have a good canvas to begin with, this ought to be able to double up as a pretty primer. Get this if you’re gunning for the delightfully delicate, lit-from-within luminescence that’s synonymous with Japanese women.

All about the base

On to makeup proper. Clarence says he’s obsessed with the Sheer Fluid Veil and what d’you know, so am I. This brightening base boasts a barely perceptible pink pearlescence that’s very pretty indeed; on good skin days, this alone on your bare face should suffice.

Need a little more cover-up for your complexion? The Radiant Fluid Foundation is a weightless wonder that’s the #HGProduct for a handful of other beauty journos I know, and for good reason too: The souffle-soft consistency of this fluid foundation affords coverage that flirts on the edge of sheer and medium for almost-nude skin that’s yours, only better. As far as contenders for finest feather-light foundation go, this is a real heavyweight. Do your skin a favour and check this out, stat.

Makeup madness!

Love colour as much as I do? You’ll be drooling all over your keyboard at these beauty baubles from Spring 2016, starting with what must be the “highlight” of the collection: A new Luminizing Face Enhancer shade! (This is #15, if you’re collating a list for your next beauty binge.) The carefully calibrated mix of peachy pigments in this compact is just about the only powder formula capable of breathing life and light into my skin – better at fending off signs of fatigue than snatching forty winks, in my opinion.

Speaking of peach, orange you glad for the colour orange? The hot hue lends a juicy jolt of life to your face – and in a happy stroke of luck (so to speak), citrusy colours are as universally flattering as they are fortune-bearing. Just take a gander at the new Extra Rich Lipstick in 113, a beautifully bright stick that is just so fun and fresh to wear – feel free to dab directly onto your lips, cheeks and eyelids for a multi-purpose hit of colour.

“Eye” also adore the single shadow pots: The Cream Eye Color Solo in 305, in particular, is terrific for touch-ups throughout the day. The universally flattering fawn hue is fabulous both over and under concealer; pat lightly into lids before makeup for better “grab” of pigments, and top up whenever your under-eye region starts to betray signs of fatigue.

To nail the glimmering greens and golds encircling the eyes of our model Lily K, follow up with the Powder Eye Color Solos in 201, 204 and 208; these beautifully blendable hues are hugely wearable when worn as a wash over the entire eyelid. To get perfectly elliptical rings of colour around the socket, buff well for a really sheer finish that’s less street tramp and more ethereal gilded goddess.

Take a bow

Here’s a parting shot of our lucky and luxe look in a green-and-gold colourway. A fresh face paired with softly smoked eyes and satiny smackers that should complement a boardroom-ready ensemble (think tailored separates and kitten heels) as well as it would a chic cheongsam for Chinese New Year visiting. Try it today!
