7 scalp treatment products to prevent oily scalp and dandruff woes

Have you been taking care of your scalp correctly?

It’s no secret that we all want clear skin and we’re willing to do (and spend) a lot to get it – from serums to emulsions to sunscreens – well, the list just goes on.

And when it comes to getting luscious tresses, there are shampoos, conditioners, nourishing leave-in treatments, frizz-fighting serums and reparative hair masks.

But what most of us may not know is that the secret to a healthy head of hair lies in having a balanced scalp. Since the fat produced by your body is also distributed throughout the hair fibres, a healthy scalp translates to silky and hydrated strands. Whereas an unhealthy scalp is cause for excessive oiliness, hair loss, dryness, itching and peeling.

In our search for hair commercial-worthy locks, we’ve unknowingly neglected the scalp with blow-dry after blow-dry, salt sprays and dry shampoos (that clogs and weakens the hair follicles). Not to mention sun exposure and pollution, as well.

With scalp facials and treatments popping up on salon menus and a recent surge of scalp care products – a lot of which contain the same skin-loving ingredients found in skincare – being released in the beauty hemisphere, that’s probably enough of an indication that we should be paying more attention to maintaining the health of our scalps.

Her are some scalp care products to work your way towards a healthier scalp than before.

7 scalp treatment products to prevent oily scalp and dandruff woes
1. Living Proof Restore Dry Scalp Treatment, $47, Sephora

Skincare brands are not the only ones zooming in on balancing our microbiomes, haircare brands are too. This leave-in treatment uses a vitamin B3-based microbiome-balancing complex to balance the scalp’s natural ecosystem, while hyaluronic acid delivers instant soothing and hydration to dry, flakey scalps.

2. Gallinee Care Mask For Hair & Scalp, $50, Sephora
image

Gallinee’s claim to fame? Products that contain prebiotics, probiotics and lactic acid, because the brand believes that happy skin needs happy bacteria. This care mask is no different. Enriched with fermented rice water and the brand’s pre- and pro-biotic complex to support the scalp’s microbiome, it melts into hair fibres and smoothens them out. Once the scalp’s microbiome is balanced, healthy hair follows.

3. Ouai Scalp & Body Scrub, $54, Sephora

A two-in-one product, this deep-cleansing, foaming scrub can be used once a week from your head to your toes. Described as a rehab session for the scalp and skin, it contains sugar crystals that gently scrub away dead skin to leave it clean and soft. It also contains probiotics to boost the skin’s natural defences.

4. Sachajuan Scalp Treatment, $62

Suitable to be used in place or as an addition to your regular cleansing routine for extra deep cleansing, this treatment is said to eradicate dandruff and soothe irritated scalps. A blend of soothing rosemary oil, menthol, salicylic acid and ginger extract calms irritation and redness while maintaining the scalp’s moisture levels. Piroctone olamine and climbazole, thoroughly and gently removes dry dandruff.

5. Sachajuan Scalp Shampoo, $38

This shampoo works hand in hand with the brand’s scalp treatment to solve dandruff problems. Natural extracts help to calm the scalp while maintaining a healthy moisture balance leaving the hair looking and feeling fresh. It also boasts of Ocean Silk Technology – a combination of algae’s and other tailor-made ingredients which has a healing effect on the hair.

6. Briogeo Scalp Revival™ Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment, $47

Like how a charcoal clay mask detoxifies the skin, this scalp treatment does the same for the scalp. Infused with binchotan charcoal which draws impurities from the scalp and hair follicles to remove buildup and provide the foundation for optimal scalp health.

A cooling blend of peppermint and spearmint oils reduces scalp itchiness and tea tree oil has antiseptic and healing properties that reduce scalp irritation and inflammation.

Witch Hazel water helps regulate oil production to prevent an oily scalp while sodium hyaluronate and aloe vera keep it balanced and hydrated. Biotin – a super vitamin – provides essential nutrients to the hair follicles to support healthy hair growth.

7. Supergoop! Poof Part Hair Scalp Powder SPF 45, $50, Sephora

Yes, just like our skin, our scalp requires sun protection too. Think of this like as a dry shampoo, but with 100 per cent mineral SPF 45 to keep sun damage at bay.
