Celebrating Christmas in the tropics can feel like quite the travesty. Don’t get me wrong, Singapore has plenty of charm at this time of the year, what with the famed lights along Orchard Road, festive Starbucks drinks, the more recent Christmas Wonderland at Gardens By The Bay, and a whole slew of other family traditions we have developed over the years.
That said, it’s not unusual to feel like you’re missing out on the Western Christmas narrative we grew up watching on TV and in movies. In our reality, there’s no snow, no layering of thermal wear, no sitting by fireplaces, and way less drinking of hot chocolate or mulled wine than one might like. It’s also not always practical to travel somewhere else to spend Christmas, especially if you want to spend it with your nearest and dearest at home.
If you can’t experience a wintry Christmas for yourself, there are plenty of ways to bring it to you instead. One of my favourite ways to do just that is with candles. This year, I’ve rounded up some candles that I hope will help you feel like you’ve been transported someplace magical, all from the comfort and familiarity of your own homes.

If a warm, spicy orange scent sounds as festive to you as it does to me, then you are going to love Jo Malone’s limited edition Orange Bitters scent. It’s of course available in the form of a cologne, but there is also this wonderful ceramic candle complete with the harlequin design that is signature to its Merry Mischief collection this year.
The candle has notes of bright sweet orange, crisp mandarin and the bite of bitter orange. For some Christmassy sweetness, there’s a dash of rich prune and a base of sandalwood for some warm woodiness. The scent on this candle is quite a strong one, so much so that you can even smell it when its ceramic lid is on!

If there’s one thing I need at this time of the year, it’s the smell of real Christmas trees. Whether it’s from a real tree I decorate at home or a bunch of lovely candles, I can’t get enough. Arguably, the scent of pine or fir trees is an absolutely necessary and iconic part of the Christmas festivities, even when we live in the tropics where such trees don’t actually grow.
This candle in particular encapsulates the scent of a traditional balsam fir. If you like a really clean and fresh scent without any overpowering spicy or woody notes, this one is going to be perfect.

Like the name suggests, this candle was inspired by clear winter skies and the Nativity, which is essentially the gospel story of the birth of Jesus. It’s got notes of pepper, tonka beans, white flowers, amber and sandalwood. The result is a warm and musky scent that still has a lovely clean freshness to it.
The white flowers and sandalwood are quite prominent, which makes me want to light this up on a cold rainy day. Other bits and bobs that may justify its price-tag: It’s made in France and crafted from a special vegetable-based wax, then housed in a gilded amber glass vessel.

Moving away from their signature clear glass candles, this one from Diptyque comes in a reflective green which might not fit in with your minimalist decor quite like an original would. That said, this one does smell like a pine forest, thanks to the intensely woody notes of resin, cedar, and patchouli, which I also really like. So if you want something that might transport you to a literal wintry cabin in the woods, this one’s a contender.

I’m just throwing this incredibly affordable candle in with the rest, because it truly smells like pine trees which, as I’ve mentioned, never fail to make me think of Christmas. This year I made it a point to get to Ikea as soon as the chain launched its Christmas range at the start of this month, in order to ensure I didn’t miss out on any pretty gift wrapping things like I did the previous year.
And of course, I couldn’t pass up sampling all the holiday candles to find my favourite. I liked this one the most, and it’s really cheap if you just don’t want to spend crazy amounts of money on a candle.
The only thing that’s a reflection of the price is that the scent doesn’t travel very far, so this candle is perhaps best used in a smaller enclosed room rather than larger open spaces. You could always place several of these around the house for a stronger scent!

Can there ever be too many pine-scented candles? Probably not. This Birchwood Pine candle from Nest is infused with a mixture of both White Pine and Fir Balsam notes, with that warm wintry addition of musk and amber to keep you warm on a chilly night.
The Holiday candle, on the other hand, sounds like the perfect spiced holiday drink. It’s suffused with aromas evocative of the festive season like pomegranate, mandarin orange, pine, cloves and cinnamon, all of which sound like they’d be delicious in a cup, perhaps with a little whisky to boot.

If you aren’t familiar with Jo Loves, you may be surprised to know it’s also a range by Jo Malone. It started off as a secret side project for her to experiment further with fragrances to create a new scent, bath, body and candle collection inspired by the memories and moments in life that she loves. Her candles are hand-poured in England and have the same simple-yet-beautiful design we see in the Jo Malone collections. The candles also come with a lid so you can keep out dust and debris.
The Log Fires candle is meant to be a comforting blend of smooth and smoky woods laced with Lapsang Souchong tea to evoke the scent of a roaring log fire.
The Salted Caramel candle, on the other hand, is calling my name the loudest, so if you prefer something sweet and are a like-minded lover of salted caramel, the blend of warm liquid caramel and crushed rock salt should call out to you, too.
