Anti-ageing treatments for brighter, smoother, young-looking eyes

Why get one aesthetics treatment when you can do a combo to address multiple concerns?

Your eyes may be the windows to your soul but it’s also one of the first places to show the signs of ageing, simply because the skin around the eyes is only one-third as thick as the skin on your face. Thinner skin = more delicate skin.

Your eyes are also hard at work all day, blinking about 20,000 times, expressing your emotions, and just looking at stuff. The eye area also has less sebaceous glands, making it drier and more prone to fine lines and wrinkles. Throw in your genes, a stressful lifestyle and the now increased strain of staring at your devices—yes, you have a problem.

And now that it’s mandatory to mask up when you’re outside your house, your eyes are going to be the first thing people see when they look at you. That includes your dark circles, puffiness and fine lines.

You could certainly apply a good anti-ageing eye cream to combat the problem—Dr Karen Soh, medical director of Privé Clinic, says one containing caffeine can help reduce undereye puffiness—but if your concerns are more troubling and you want to make a better impression, she suggests trying anti-ageing aesthetics treatments for the eyes.

While there are specific treatments to address the different ageing concerns of your eye area, Dr Soh recommends a combination of anti-ageing treatments for the best results.

“Most patients have multiple concerns, and every patient’s needs and concerns are different. Combination treatments can target a variety of ageing concerns at the same time. It also allows us to better tailor a holistic treatment that can work well together to better suit the condition of the patient.”

You won’t need to wait very long in-between the different treatments, as Dr Soh says that energy-based procedures like Thermage, Ulthera or lasers can be done together with injectables such as dermal fillers.

Before you reach out for your phone to start making an appointment, bear in mind these things before going for an aesthetics treatment.

1. Safety first

Ensure that the clinic you go to is reputable and their treatments are safe. All the treatments recommended by Privé Clinic have undergone multiple rounds of clinical testing, so you can be assured that they’re safe and gentle enough even for the ultra-sensitive eye area.

2. Experience matters

Always ensure that your doctor is experienced and skilled in administering such treatments, especially since the eye area does tend to bruise more easily.

3. After-care is important too

Post-treatment, don’t forget to keep the area clean, and be extra gentle when you apply your skincare. Other things to take note of include avoiding any sun exposure, and swimming or visiting the sauna until the area is fully healed. If you get a laser treatment done, do apply sunscreen on the eye contours daily as well. In addition, Privé Clinic also provides an after-care guide for all patients. It even has a dedicated hotline you can call for more post-treatment advice.

Here are three treatments you’d want to consider.

For Eye Bags and to Give the Eye Area a Lift

Try: Fillers + Exilis Elite Eyes

Eye bags and puffiness are different. Puffiness is usually temporary, caused by crying, allergies or consuming too much salt or alcohol.  Eye bags, however, are formed when the muscles around the eyes weaken with age and the fat pads that help support the eyes migrate into the lower eyelids.

To minimise the appearance of eye bags, dermal fillers are used first to “fatten” and lift the undereye area, creating a smoother finish at the eye contours. The effects usually last 12 to 18 months.

To enhance the effects, Privé Clinic pairs this with the Exilis Elite Eyes. This non-invasive treatment uses radio frequency (RF) energy, said to promote collagen production to tighten the sagging while enhancing the lift.

What makes Exilis Elite Eyes unique is its built-in temperature measurement system, which adjusts according to skin tissue density and depth. This then ensures the optimal level of power is delivered to the targeted area at all times.

For Dark Circles and to Brighten the Eye Area

Try: Fontana 4D Laser + Fillers

Dark eye circles are caused by a variety of reasons, from genetics and pigmentation to ageing, which can cause a hollowed-out area under the eyes that looks like a shadow has been cast.

According to Dr Soh, to erase the appearance of dark circles, a laser treatment, such as the Fontana 4D Laser, can be done before injectables like fillers. The laser lightens skin discoloration, especially if your dark circles are due to pigmentation.

Using two different wavelengths, this skin resurfacing laser encourages cellular turnover, which in turn helps lighten skin discoloration while reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles. The result: The eye area is smoother and brighter over time.

This is then followed by injecting fillers under the eyes to fill in the hollowed area, further reducing the dark shadows. A bonus: Fillers injected near the lower lash line can also give the eye area a more youthful appearance.

For Severe Wrinkles and Crow’s Feet

Try: Fillers + Thermage FLX

The reason you get wrinkles is due to a loss of collagen and skin elasticity. Most of the time, they are caused by constant movement like blinking and smiling. Sometimes though, the lines can be static, which means that they are always present.

Injecting fillers at these areas instantly lifts and fills skin at the surface, and helps repair and hydrate skin to reduce the appearance of the lines.

But you’ll also want to address skin laxity at the same time, and this is where Thermage FLX comes in. A non-invasive treatment, it uses RF to tighten the collagen fibres while stimulating new collagen and elastin production in skin. And as the results of Thermage are more evident in the months that follow, it also helps enhance the effects of the fillers while prolonging the results and time before your next session.
