3 “Unusual” skin-healing treatments that help you look younger

These anti-ageing treatments help tackle fine lines, wrinkles and sagging and acne scarring

So you’ve gone for the usual laser and ultrasound treatments to keep your skin youthful, and now you’re up for something more adventurous. Don’t worry, we gotchu.

These anti-ageing aesthetics treatments might sound a little strange at first (using salmon DNA and umbilical cord stem cell? causing micro injuries to your skin?) but they’ve been proven to address skin concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, sagging and even post-acne scarring.

And since studies have found that we lose 1 per cent of the collagen and elastin in our skin every year after we hit 25, there’s no harm in starting early (or now) to address your skin anti-ageing concerns. And Privé Clinic might have the solutions you need.

How to heal damaged skin: Rejuran Healer uses salmon DNA

Rejuran Healer

This minimally invasive procedure involves micro-injections of polynucleotide (PN), which is essentially salmon DNA fragments, into skin, where it’s said to improve the biological composition of damaged skin.

Dubbed “baby skin booster”, this anti-ageing treatment is all about achieving a dewy, supple complexion. The salmon DNA extract not only improves skin texture and density to lift and firm, but also helps balance oil and moisture levels, while reducing excess sebum production and pore size. In younger skin, Rejuran Healer can be used to keep skin in optimal condition for longer.

Ideal For: Improving skin texture and tone, while reducing the look of fine lines, wrinkles and sagging. It is also a skin-healing treatment for severe acne and post-acne scars.

How Safe It Is: According to Privé Clinic, Salmon DNA is bio-compatible with human cells, which means the treatment is safe and effective. And if you’re worried about the pain, numbing cream is applied prior to minimise discomfort.

Downtime: You might experience mild bumps or swelling at the injection sites immediately after the treatment, but these should subside within 48 hours.

For aftercare, Dr Karen Soh, medical director of Privé Clinic, advises that you use alcohol- and fragrance-free products and avoid intensive activities such as strenuous sports, hot yoga or sauna for at least two days. Continue with normal skin care routine such as cleansing, moisturising and applying sunblock daily.

Results can be seen in two to four weeks, but to enhance the quality of your skin, a course of three to six treatments is recommended, depending on your skin condition.

How to heal damaged skin: Nanopore Microneedling makes skin think it's injured
image

Nanopore Microneedling

Inspired by the fact that our bodies are built to heal themselves, this minimally invasive procedure “tricks” the skin into thinking it’s injured.

How? Using micro needles to cause controlled micro injury to skin. In turn, it “triggers the release of growth factors and increases collagen production for tissue repair, which encourages the growth of a new layer of skin that is more even in texture, firmer and more toned”, says Dr Soh.

The treatment also delivers an ampoule containing concentrated stem cell extract into the skin. This goes into skin’s deepest layers to target a variety of concerns and heal skin, as well as to reinforce its protective barrier.

But that doesn’t mean you should go around hurting yourself.

According to Dr Soh, the effect you get with Nanopore Microneedling cannot be achieved when you injure yourself because “the cut is already too huge when it is visible”. She adds that the needles used in this procedure are ultra-fine – from 0.25mm to 2mm – and reach only either the epidermis (surface layer) or the dermis (deeper layers for scars and uneven skin texture). When you cut yourself, the injury goes beyond the skin’s surface to the tissue beneath, which requires more repair than just building collagen.

Ideal For: A smooth and supple complexion, but also useful for treating mild acne, oily skin and enlarged pores.

How Safe It Is: Very safe when done in a professional setting. It is important to note that the right technique, amount of pressure applied and the sterility of the equipment plays an essential role in achieving a highly effective treatment with minimal downtime.

Downtime: Very little. You might feel some pain during the treatment and might see some redness, depending on how sensitive your skin is. If your skin feels slightly tender after the session, switch to gentle skincare products that don’t contain alcohol or fragrance, and apply sunscreen daily.

You should see some skin improvement two to three days after the first session, but a course of six sessions is recommended for best results.

How to heal damaged skin: Calecim Youth Restore Facetherapy uses cord stem cells
image

Calecim Youth Restore Facetherapy

Derived from the lining of umbilical cords from red deer, such stem cells are packed with skin-restoring proteins like hyaluronic acid, collagen and fibronectin.

The treatment starts with an ultrasonic deep cleansing to remove all the gunk in your pores along with dead skin. This first step preps skin to receive all the goodness of the Calecim stem cell-enriched ampoule. Dr Soh says that this active ingredient is able to send “youth messages” to skin cells, helping to boost moisture levels, and firming skin to give your complexion a youthful and radiant appearance.

Ideal For: Rebuilding skin’s natural moisture barrier, especially for dry and dehydrated skin. It’s also helpful after a laser or energy-based treatment like Pico Laser, Ultherapy and Thermage, and can be combined with Rejuran Healer and Nanopore Microneedling to speed up skin recovery.

How Safe It Is: The stem cells are derived from red deer that have been organically and ethically raised in New Zealand. And as umbilical cords are naturally discarded after the birth of the calves, harvesting this “medical waste” does not harm either mother or calf. More importantly, the use of cord-lining stem cells poses no harm to the human body.

Downtime: No downtime as this is a facial treatment, and no specific aftercare, though you should continue with good skincare habits such as cleansing, moisturising and applying sunblock daily.
